Is it possiable to do this without any soldering? I mean just take a piece of wire and short the two points together long enough to flash the drive?

Yep

I just flashed by DVD MS28 with Xtreme 4.2A using a VIA 2641A PCI CARD ($10 from Ebay)
I used Xtreme bootmaker and SAM360
1) First disconnect everything IDE and SATA from your PC
2) Connect XBOXDVD drive to the SATA1 (PRIMARY), on the PCI CARD thats connector on the side of the PCI, it is facing the front of the PC.
3) Power on PC and boot using Floppy / USB Disk made for Xtreme bootmaker
4) Power on XBOX360
5) Type 'SAMREAD XXXXXXX XXXXX' (where x is your serial number) and press 'ENTER'
6) A menu appears, Select the channel of the XBOX and power off XBOX360
7) Awaiting 10 sec
8) Power on XBOX360
9) Read firmware its loops 3-4 times before the process completes
10) Poweroff for XBOX
11) Type  'SAMHACK XXXXXXX XXXXX' (where x is your serial number) and press 'ENTER' repeat steps 6
 - 10

It have tried for many guides and different combination of SATA controllers.  Only this has work for me.

This method worked for me as well but my orignal xbox backups do not work in the 360 drive with hacked firmware. The process for backing up a orignal 360 game looks to be a royal pain since you have to remove the cover of a dvd-rom drive, I will definately NOT be attempting that and possiably ruining a perfectly good drive. Can you use the xbox 360 dvd-rom drive to read the discs? If so, a link to a tutorial would be very much appreciated! Thanks for the easiest mod I have ever done to a console. The steps listed above worked  perfectly without disabling anything in the bios or unplugging any cables.

So you need to have a SATA PCI card with VT6421A chipset ? to flash the drive, even if you already have SATA Connection on the PC itself?

Thx in advance

No, and you can't even just buy a new drive and put it in without the drive key.

well really the MOST important thing you need is your dvd key.

if your drive does not work ..and you do not have a copy of this key or the original.bin to get the key..then you are screwed ... sell the  box for parts if you can.

if you flashed the drive... then you SHOULD have the dvd key.. OR at least the file of the hacked firmware you tried to flash with.. that should hold the dvd key.

IF YOU GET THIS KEY no matter where you get it from.. and it is CORRECT.. Then you will have to find a image of the original ms28 firmware from SOMEWHERE.. and no the "usuall places" will  not have  it because I believe that would be illegal??   anyway this is what you would have to do.

or send the drive to someone who can remove the chip and reflash it externally is another option.  You would still have to be able to have the dvd key somewhere.  (if located on the chip currently.. the person reflashing externally could get it)

I'll explain you what I did:i'm sure i have extracted another orig.bin instead of that of ms28, and believing that it was the correct orig.bin I have flashed the drive with 42b without a backup of the original.I think it was the firmware of dvd writer, infact it doesn't work anymore...

Hi guys, I'm pretty much new to this forum and I have to say thanks to all of you for your contribution in the scene. Without you all we wouldn't be where we are right now, so major mad props!

I've read about all there is in that thread and in forums all around about the xbox 360 and I got a thing to ask.

I bought a VIA 6421L PCI card and installed it in on the board. The thing is that when I boot Windows cannot seem to detect it and no install process is being required.

I have a P5GDC-V Deluxe board with the ITE onboard chipset and Windows XP Pro SP2. Can someone tell me if my card is simply dead or if it is because of my system.

Thanks for your time guys!

Have you tried going to Device Manager and searching for new hardware?  Also, you could try moving the card to another PCI slot.

Ok, up to this point I'm pretty much screwed. I managed to rebuilt an old PC I had and installed the Via sata card. Made a bootdisk with xtreme bootmaker 3.5 and loaded the firmware 4.2a in. The card got detected and is perfectly installed. Managed to make the firmware of the drive unload on my bootdisk and hacked it. Then I flashed the drive with the new hacked firmware and did a test. The results I got were quite interesting. I had a scrambled video signal like a region mismatch problem and no audio. I could see though that the 360 went on the media center without any hicups. Tried booting a burned game and it worked though I couldn't see anything clearly. At that point I thought that maybe the firmware version I had was a PAL one. What I did then is that I took the old xtreme 2.0 firmware and patched it with the original one like we used to do before. I thought that since this worked for me once on my older 360 and I managed to get this new one to dump it'd be ok but after flashing and testing what I got was a general microsoft error message in like 6 language that was saying I needed to contact customer support with an error code E66. At this point I tried a lot of other formulas and what I thought could solve the problem but to no avail. I haven't put back the original firmware since I'm pretty sure it is going to work. Has anyone encountered this type of issue or has anyone ever heard of it? What should I do?

My 360 drive has the MS28 firmware and is a July build. Can anyone light my lantern here?

Thanks for your time guys!

As far as i'm aware there is no way of getting the drive code out of the xbox, if you can't get it off the drive or you've blown the drive before you backed it up your knackered. Don't assume that getting error E65 on screen means its totally dead, the first one I did i got this error but I could still read and flash the drive.
