Can You Convert A Ntsc-j (japan) Drive Into A Ntsc (usa)?
« on: July 13, 2006, 12:18:00 PM »

Will reflashing the firmware on a NTSC-J with a NTSC firmware convert the drive into a US NTSC version?

No.  It's not the drive thats locked to the region, its the console motherboard.

While it is true that the drive itself is region free, when plugged into a PC via sata it reports itself as whatever region the inserted media is. ie a region free game will report the drive as set to "none set" and a region 2 disc will report the drive as "region 2 with region 2 disc". So there could be a way to get the firmware to always report itself as what ever the region motherboard is and allow for region free gaming.
I hope so anyway.

Yes, but can a NTSCJ drive can be used to replace a broken NTSC drive in a NTSC Motherboard if I reflash the NTSCJ drive with the firmware from the NTSC.  Therefore, can the NTSCJ work the same as the NTSC drive once reflashed with the NTSC? in the NTSC Mobo.

based on ienjoygaming's statement that the drive itself is region-free, I don't see how you can have a "NTSCJ" drive.  You can just have a "drive" if they are region-free.  In other words, a drive from any region motherboard should work with any other motherboard regardless of region as long as you insert your key into the firmware.  I'm not sure if the drive is region-free, just going off of ienjoygaming's words.  If it is, it should work in any other Xbox 360 no problem.

Yes it will work just fine, the region coding is contained in the motherboard, not the dvd drive. You can use any 360 dvd drive in any xbox regardless of region as long as you have the proper firmware code.
