Got pictures, its a Phillips VAD6038.  The date on the drive is 11/2006.  Lot # on box is 0651, below that there is another number that reads WO B4J61213L1.  Got a few close up shots, a shot from behind to show the SATA and power, and one with the whole open box itself with the drive inside.  Hope this helps out and proves any disbelievers that this drive does actually exist.

My lot number on my box is 0650, and the other number is also WO B4J61213L1. The name next to "TEAM" is CSON. Was I right about how quiet it is? It's damn near inaudible when it's reading the disc. Show'em pics of the tray. It's the exact same as the pics of the Philips that the Scene posted, except it's gray. What was the MFR date on the back of your 360? Mine was 12-15-2006. Thanks for backing me up on this too, btw. MODS, can we get a sticky on this thread?

Right on time.

I was always saying the production run just before Xmas'06 would have these drives in them.

Very Nice Pictures.

If you are willing to go one step more, take a small screwdriver and crack out the drive case,
and post a picture of both sides of the PCBoard (inside guts) containing the microcontroller.

Just so we know what is needed to work on and if the flash is visible or internal or serial now.

Finally if anyone has a spare drive to ship to us we can get to work on the firmware for it ASAP.

So BenQ makes quality drives? I'm strictly into consoles, so I'm not familiar with their quality. From what I can tell from my drive in my 360, they know how to make a nice dvd drive.

They make a very cheap DVD+DL burner that is recommended second to the Philips 110/111D; BenQ and Philips have made many drives together over the past few years.  Although I think my benq burner laser is a bit weak, I thought it was since I first started to using it; most people report much greater success than mine though.  The BenQ burner holds the record for the fastest DVD+R burn time (at just over 5 minutes) and can even burn most DVD+R 8x media at 16x without problems.  There are many up-to-date firmware flashers for BenQ burners, so there is a chance that if this one can be unlocked it may be an easy flash process in windows.

Looks like this one is a BenQ/Philips.  Wonder if there will be BenQ/LG's coming out with the 65nm's later in the year as garyopa knows his stuff.

Doh, oh well.
We will never get these drives to Norway anyway, we haven't even gotten 0078fk yet, by the time we get these ugly Philips drives here, i'm pretty sure we got a working firmware already.

Hope Microsoft haven't done too much to stop us this time though, can't they just give up?
My guess: Respected Developers getting ahold of a Philip VAD6038 drive = Hacked firmware in a couple of weeks! smile.gif

I kinda want to donate to GaryOPA, so he can buy this drive wink.gif
But it possible to even sign firmware? Never heard about anyone doing that before.

I could have sworn that LiteOn was making the next batch of drives.  This should really have a new thread, as the new DVD-ROM is not the one in the title....it is a VAD6038.

snap a picture of the DVD tray OPEN. Are there any differences in the tray as to be able to identify this BENQ drive without cracking open the case?

just out of curiosity, were these in the core or premium setups?  bundled with movies?  or is it a crapshoot?  was going to recommend a buddy get one due to him having kids and they step on discs (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) ....now this, uggghhh

if i get a hold of one through a friends purchase i will take pictures of every angle of every item to send to gary

The tray looks IDENTICAL to the VAD6037/21, except it's gray. I got mine in a Premium 360 with a MFR date of 12-15-2006. Team name on the label on the box it came in was CSON.

Is there a way to find out the type of drive without opening the case?  I just got my 360 a few weeks ago so I could have one too, but I do not feel too comfortable opening it up--I don't want to break anything.

GARYOPA - shouldn't you fulfill your promises on the Hitachi Firmware
before you start dabbling with another one?

Version 3.0 of hitachi firmware with media stealth was promised  "next weekend"
in the beginning of October - it's now February !!!
