not sure why you would remove the heat sink screws.. I only took out the 6 long screws that hold the top plastic part of the case together with the rest of the unit. hell I never put those back in so I can easily take it all apart when flashing other drives.
I never touched the heatsink screws or anything else..
removing all the screws just to get to the DVD drive is not neccessary... that would be like disassembling your car engine to drain the oil.... just remove the parts that need to be removed..

your best luck in repairing it would be to buy a working 360 MOBO off the BST area and make sure the seller gives you the original DVD key that's matched with the MOBO. take that key and flash it to your DVD drive and there ya go.. a fixed 360 for likely under $150.. I've seen MOBOs going for $80 in the BST area.
