if you havent adjusted the pot yet, you may want to try try this solution first.

if the issue is as suggested by using the "rubberband method", then both solutions seem to have the same end result.   but most people would feel better trying the rubberband method before the pot tweak.  its worth a shot anyway.

and read the thread from the point the link takes you to on.  the beginning of the thread didnt come up with a solution.

I flashed my TS (MS25) with Xtreme 3.3 (also tried 3.2 which it is currently at). Originals play fine and backups originally played fine but no longer work (dirty disc error).

I had a Pioneer DVR-108 drive which I replaced with a 111D and am using Verbatim 2.4x discs but the same problem. I also tried the pot tweak and the same problem occurs. In all scenarios originals play fine but backups dont.

I know the backups (images) are good so that just leaves the media (which nobody seems to have problems with the verbatims) and the actual drive.

I decided to order a replacement laser off of ebay today in a last ditch effort in hopes that will finally solve my problem.

One thing I did which could have possibly damaged the laser is that I had to do the rubber band mod in order to get it to recognize backups in the first place. When doing that I put a disc in the tray and used something to hold the disc down (didn't want to rip apart the case to get the plastic piece out) and needless to say it didn't work. The disc spun then popeed out. So it is possible it damaged the laser although I would think if that was the case it would also affect originals which still work fine.

One final thing is that my original of DOA 4 also has problems (even before I flashed the firmware) which I know believe is a dirty disc error (I had the disc replaced by Tecmo so it's brand new). I would get random freezes which I now see in my backups but can hear the "sound" it makes when the guide or dirty disc error window pops up. The 360 is unresponsive to the controller but with a remote I can open the tray and see a faint picture of the dirty disc error. I tried DOA4 again, this time with the audio (in game) off and sure enough I heard the same sound and see the same faint window when it goes back to the dash. That is the only original I had a problem with and didn't realize until I started using backups that it may actually be the drive (dirty disc).

So hopefully the new laser will fix my problems but as it seems quite a few people have issues with backups playing sporadically despite using a correct burner and media I was looking for any more advice or suggestions outside of buying another a 360 and hoping for better results.

F**********! Well, I seemed to have bricked a drive... after POT'ing my Hitachi 46, it worked great, booted from cold-starts, etc.

So I tried doing the same to my friends Hitachi 47, took it from 3.38 to 3.01. Popped it in... and nothing. Ejects, the 360 can see drive and so can Windows. But it never spins up. I can see the laser pop-in for a half-second, but the disc just never rotates.

I can flash it, etc. I've checked every single trace, ribbon cable, etc. and can't find anything. Doesn't read Cd's either. So it probably isn't the laser?

Anyone experience this? Suggestions appreciated...

im having this same problem, i thought it was just the laser but i replaced it and still not spinning or playing cds? can anybody help? the ribbon cables look fine. which ones can u replace and where can u get them from

thanx

If your 360 is giving you open tray on back ups only, you may want to try adding a spacer to the rails the laser lens assembly runs on.  This is also know as the rubber band mod and it works.

hi ntloser

no its giving me an open tray on all discs dvd and cd.. when u put a disc in the drive doesnt even spin.

i have already tried the spacer trick aswell super glued a piece of the plastic that comes on the top and bottom of black cd spindles.

i have just borrowed my friends 360 and swapped the ribbon cable that goes from the laser to the pcm but it still is not spinning and saying open tray!

its the hitatchi 47d drive btw

thanx

Correct me if I'm worng.

As far as I can understand, the "dirty disc" error can be solved by the pot tweak
And the "open tray" error can be solved by the rubber band trick.

Those two may have nothing in common right?

Have a friend with an hitachi 47DH, flashed it with xtreme3.3. It reads orignals, but not backups. Get the "dirty disc" error. So i guess pot tweak is the way to go?

thnx

Spacer to the rails? Is there a tutorial for this?
I have one 360 in particular that is having major issues. I keep tweaking the pot down, its now at 1.9KOhms. Its working fine again. This is an ms25, sf-hd63 laser inside, using xtreme 1.0
This thread got really long and I'm not about to swim through the sea of noobs, no time today.

Use Verbatim discs, might be pricier than others but cheaper in the long run than a new dvd drive or laser.

Yeah .. it was kind of a bad choice of words.

The laser moves back and forth on 2 "rails".
In most cases, the "OPEN TRAY" issue occurs when the laser moves too far "in" on the rails, as if it was trying to read the center of the disk. Putting a rubberband or some other type of spacer to prevent the laser from moving too far in fixes the problem. I have tried it and it works.
Its easy to do and only takes a couple minutes after you have the dvd drive out.  This thread has some pics on page 2.
PS if you turned the pot down to 1.9 you may have permanantly damaged your laser.

MODS when are you going to sticky the rubber band fix ... it is less dangerous than the pot tweak and can be undone.

Yes, I know they said don't tweak it down past 2.8K. We already ordered a new laser, so its no big deal to try things. Btw, its not working again now, that last tweak just made it work for a little bit. I'm definitely going to try that spacer thing. I've seen a couple of Sammy's that needed a pot tweak and those 360's haven't come back yet. But this one is a bugger! Whats interesting is, this guy bought a launch console that had problems, so this one is a replacement directly from m$. Oh and originals play fine.

Then yeah you should try the rubber band fix. It is easy and takes 5 minutes.

I'm trying the rubber band right now. (my apologies to the author of this thread)
First I turned the pot back up to 2.9K Ohms. I tried two different rubber bands. At first I wrapped it around the rail a few times. It didn't work, so I wrapped it only once so there's only a couple mm spacer width. Still no go, tried a smaller band, no go. Here's what it does: Light comes on...disc spins...laser approaches center...makes a sound like a floppy drive when it hits center, comes back out where it started and tries moving in one more time until the light goes out and the spinning stops. I assume this is the ss verification stage, its the very first thing it does. Popped in an original without a rubber band: it speeds up and boots the disc. Tried the original WITH the rubber band and it made awful gear-strippping noises. So if it doesn't make those clicking noises, then its not trying to drive over the rubber band with the backup. Any ideas? My new laser is on its way.

Assuming your laser is still good at this point, try a larger thicker elastic.

MODA or anyone else ftm,

Please tell me if I need to do a POT Calibration:

SAMMY MS25 Date: Jan 2006
I have 3 backups that won't play properly (SC:DA, NHL2k7, and Marvel UA) on Verbatims...dirty disc error during loading screens for each. All my previous 13 backups still work flawlessly.
