After reading the tutorial I decided to take the plunge seeing as though i have an open tray issue. The main reason for me doing this is some games will occassionally get a dirty or damaged disk error. I have tried all of my backups on multiple 360's and mine is the only drive it would not work on.

I have now tweaked my pot settings and no longer have an open tray issue. All of my backups boot up faster, and I am much more happy. I still have a problem with dirty or damaged disk errors on a few games. Seeing as though those games NEVER boot anymore, I could just switch media. I know those backups do work, and they have worked on this drive randomly in the past. Obviously my lense is not the highest of quality or I would have never had to change my pot settings in the first place.

In response to those of you who say to switch meda... A new lense is only 25USD which is cheaper than replacing my media. Seeing as though I still have a spool with about 22 blank dvd+r dl disks on it I'm not going to go out and buy even a 3 pack just to test and see if it's a media issue. I use Memorex because the verbatums have never worked great on this drive but the memorex have always, it doesn't hurt that they are a lot less expensive either. I have been told Memorex are Ritek disks for those of you who are wondering.

I have flashed several 360 drives and all have worked like clockwork, except for mine. If you find yourself in my shoes just remember that it is very easy to install a new lense, don't be scared. It is also less expensive than buying a spool of disks and slightly more than one of those worthless 3-packs. I've included a link i was given, i don't remember if it is further back in this thread, so you can see how inexpensive it is yourself.

BTW thanks for the tutorial, it helped a little but atleast it helped.

So with the Verbatims not working in combination with the highly recommended Pioneer 111d is new i had to look elswhere. I decided to tweak my Samsung laser. I came across some cheap multimeter for 20 euro's, brandnew !
I took some time to read the tutorial by Moda and started disassembling the box.
Opening the dvd drive was a breeze after al my flash experiences so that went fast. Next thing was to remove al the flatcables so the pcb could be removed. That proved to be a little tricky as those cables are pretty vulnerable and easy to break. But the pcb has to be removed to get better access to the pot. The first reading was 3.11 ohm, which is pretty bad actually, because there is not much room left for tweaking, as it is dangerous to get under 2.8 ohm. Most pots have readings between 3.8 and 4.2 ohm, so there is plenty room for adjustment.
I tried to turn the pot a little in the clockwise direction, following the tutorial, but that was also very tricky, as the pot was much smaller then i thought it would be. I tuned it a little bit and took another reading. After some rotation back and forth i managed to get the pot to 2.83 ohm, which is near the recommended dangerzone. Go below 2.8 ohm and you will definately burn your laser.
I put the box back together again and put it on. Now some Verbatims, which never booted, would boot one time, and then never again. The Platinum now booted every time and we were able to play this game over and over. Originals also played without problems....pfffffffffffffffff. It performed a little bit better after the tweak.

After this i decided to order another 360 laser on www.divineo.com , after reading the forum on pot tweaking, replacing it seems pretty easy once you got into the dvd. I just happen to have a crappy laser, that's it, and i hope my problems are over once i have this brand new laser. The bottomline is i wanna throw every media at my dvd and i want it to swallow it, i wont go for less........

I have a Samsung ms25 with Xtreme 3.3 with original pot settings at 4.70. How much tweaking do you recommend I do with this drive? I tried 4.5, 4.2, 3.9 and 3.3 - no luck so far. Should I go lower or will that risk my laser too much considering how high the original setting was?

My DVD-burner is a NEC-3540A (1.04 rpc1 fw) using Verbatim DVD+R DL @ 2.4x in CloneCD.

Also, the drive makes horrible "clicking" noises when trying to read the disc.
I have had 3 successfull reads without tweaking the laser, but I have no idea what caused it to read, so that's why I'm tweaking the pot right now to make it read better.

Okay, couldn't wait, so I tried 2.97. Still "Open Tray" - so I am not gonna try this any further. I'm setting it back to 4.7 and leave it at that.

I have officially given up trying to backup my games! See you guys later!

Anyone tried pot tweak on Hitachi?

Yes, and I killed my drive.  I may have inadvertently overtweaked it and burnt it out as the multimeter I was using had a near dead battery and I didn't realize it until it was too late.

Regardless, I have had ZERO success and will be purchasing a replacement laser soon.

according to moda, it doesnt matter if its a hitachi or a samsung, they all use the same lasers.  if you burnt out the laser, just buy a new one.  divineo has them along with a few others.  they cost around 30 dollars.  you could also get a replacement laser, and experiment with that instead, and safely store your stock one if your paranoid.  i find it a worthy investment, as replacing a laser once a year is far better than replacing game after game because my 7 year old got hold of it.  and thats assuming you have to even replace it.

First of all, I think its amazing how you guys come up with all solutions.. change the pot to make discs run better (or at all!).

Anyway, I did get the "Open Tray" messeage from time to time.. mostly, the game didn't start at all. I found this tutorial, read it, and change my pot (very carefully) from 3.52 to 3.26. Now every game starts just fine!! I'm totaly amazed.. Great work!

Be carefull when you do this, but I can promise its not to hard to do it, and the best part, it worked for me!

Thanx for great tutor!  biggrin.gif

I seem to have a problem reading the pot.
I set the turning thingie to 20k OHM and I'm getting a 1.79 reading when the pointy thingies aren't connected to anything. When I connect them to eachother, the multimeter reads 0.00. When I try to measure the pot, I get a 1.07 reading, which doesn't seem right.

The pointy thingies are connected to the multimeter with a wire (well duh) and there's 3 sockets I can stick them in.  One socket says 10A, the second says V ohm mA and the third one says COM. I tried all socket combinations and it doesn't seem to work.

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?
