Ok, I want to know if this tutorial is right for me. Here is my current setup for backups.

Burner: Pioneer 111D flashed with Dangerous Bros. 1.23
Media. Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL (media code MKM 001)
Xbox 360 Drive: Hiatchi with 1.1 firmware
Software: CloneCD 5.8.2.1 burnt at 2.4x (tried 1x but the actual speed was still 2.4x)
Results: I get my games to boot flawlessly with softboot trick, but only about 30% chance with no tricks from cold boot.

Everyone else with this exact setup gets their games booting like originals, so I have come to the conclusion that it must be my pot's setting since it sometimes works and sometimes not... what do you guys think.

Also, I do have experience adjusting pot settings, I've done it many times on my gamecube before to read backups...

i have the same setup...except i have pioneer's firmware for the 111D. all games boot with trick with a 20% change of straight boot. i will try either the 8.19 ext or the 1.23 firmware from from dangerous bros next time i burn a backup. what is the difference between 8.19ext and 1.23?

i also did the pot tweak. original pot was 3.86 -> down to 3.14 no go -> down to 2.90 still no go so i gave up  grr.gif

I tweaked my pot from 3.88 to 3.38, it cured my dvd video skipping on some 16X burns and it also plays all backups without any tricks.

PIONEER 111D, STOCK 1.19 FIRMWARE
VERB X2.4 BURNT AT X2.4

I have 1.23 firmware from the dangerous bros. should I try and flash back to 1.19 when I next time burn a game? My pot setting was at 3.4, i put it at 3.2, still same problem though

Just a friendly reminder...don't tweak your pots. Getting a better burner/media is a much safer solution.

what is better than the pioneer 111D (now with 1.23 from Dangerous Bros) + verbatim DVD+R DL combo???

anyways...an update...so after leaving my newly potted xbox360 overnight, i was able to boot my DOA4 (pioneer 1.23 firmware) with no tricks...played for about 30 minutes and then pressed eject and loaded another backup (new 1.23 Dangerous Bros firmware), power off, power on and it booted!

i think the pot calibration worked at 2.90 biggrin.gif

thanks moda!!

@brandogg

your friendly reminder is a little vague, better media and media doesnt guarantee every game to boot up. trust me ive tried it all before. only pot tweak can fix the fact that the laser cannot read a +DL disc sometimes.

Yes there is something very weird going on here. One of my burns on DATAWRITE X2.4 media was of Tomb Raider Legends, and the first couple of times i tried to load it from the dash it was a no go. So i did the 20 second shut down trick and it worked. After that no matter how i load the game it works every time. I'm now beginning to think the SS is stored somewhere locally. Maybe i should try removing my HDD and proving my theory.

Edit: Ah well thats that theory blown out the water, it still boots without the HDD.

ok...i found my dad's multimeter...its one of the older ones (analog) but i dont know if it works nor i do know how to read it - total n00b.

this is what i see:

Pic
snip

i set it at x1 - is that right? and how do i read this? the green reading is for resistance (ohms) but it starts at 3K to 0

anyone can help?

you'll need a digital meter or an analog with a better resolution in the 1-5k ohm range, that meter is too inaccurate at the needed range. the one you have is better suited for adjustments in the 0-100 ohm range. as is, you would not be able to read the small changes in values needed for an accurate adjustment.

Anyone successfully pot tweak their Hitachi for better media tolerance?  I cannot get my machine to boot my backups on either memorex or ridata media.  Going to try Verbatim tomorrow.

I checked the burn and booktype is set correctly (DVD-ROM)

I have tried using both CloneCD and Imgburn.

Burner is Benq 1655 w/ firmare: official BCGB.

Qscan with Qsuite results are not pretty.

Ideas?

Yes I want to know to if the pot calibration works on the hitachi.

I have a Pioneer 111D (1.19fw) and verbatim 2.4x DL

I burned Burnout revenge, Ghost recon and Fifa 2006.

The first 2 games work perfect but Fifa always gives me the open tray error.

Now the strange thing is that I had to adjust the image.dvd to match the name of the image.000 with fifia because there was a wrong name in image.dvd. Could this be the problem or would the pot adjusting do the trick?
