I have a benq and the pot looks different then in the Tut, I'm have trouble getting any reading, can some provide a pic or some more info

benq looks different but is quite easy, no picture but i can give a description..

1.remove lid from drive..
2.look at the drive from the back (have the sata and power port facing you)
3.measure the resistance of the pot on the left with a multimeter and note it down, this is the dvd laser pot and is the one you adjust, you need to turn it anticlockwise to increase the laser power.

make small adjustments and test...

Yes I understand, but the benq pot solder points appear on turned to the side compared to the Sam, My question is when I place the multimeter on the same corresponding points as show in the TUT, and I get no reading, any tips on how to get a reading ?

your meter might not have auto range - put it on 2000 ohms if thats the case and you'll get your reading
thats how mine is anyways

I <3 you! This fixed my otherwise doomed xbox. I wasted way to much times trying different DVD brands etc. Even Verbs top of the line disc didn't work, so I decided it was the drive. Got tipped off to this post from another "this darn drive won't work post" I personally had the "open tray" issue. Had my drive apart and the pcb up, turned the pot from the factory (4.47 which is waaayy to high from what I understand in the first place) down to 2.8 it worked immediately next time I put a disc in there. Only took 15 minutes to do.

Thanks Moda!

I'm going to recommend this be at the top of the troubleshooting list.

My head is spinning and I'm almost at ropes end.  wacko.gif

A little backround info on the unit:

RROD XENON with Hitachi GDR-312OL Drive. Successfully solved the RROD with X-CLAMP.

New issue was White screens of doom and DDEs. 90% of time its White screens.

I can get it to START screen fairly regularly (original Mass Effect game) by thumping my desk while it's laying horizontally. Obviously this creates skipping but why this works I don't know..  uhh.gif

My stock pot was at 4.28    I set it to 3.38 and tested. No joy. Now at 2.98. Still no joy.  sad.gif

Sooooo.....

Do I go lower? Should I try cleaning the the dvd drive motor spindle? Does the rubber band fix help with DDEs not just open tray?

Advice is majorly appreciated. This needs to work with live and I'm not really interested in ordering another drive as I'm hellbent on fixing this now.  muhaha.gif

I know the feeling about being hell bent on fixing something when you've had to piss around with it for so long.  But - from an outside perspective, it's probably best at this point to just buy another drive.  I have a Hitachi 47 drive that's actually worked very well for being an original drive in the 360 I purchased the day they came out.  I've had no issues whatsoever (as he knocks on wood...).

Still, with the new firmware being at 12x drive speed, even I've purchased a new BenQ drive now.  With the 1.4 f/w, I flashed it with the 8x drive speed version and the noise was at least bearable.  Now, it's unbelievably loud and I'm actually hell bent on getting rid of it!  biggrin.gif

My recommendation is to get rid of it and just give in and buy a new drive.  I ordered my BenQ through eBay today - from a long-time seller - for $45 shipped.  Your time has to be more valuable than that, right?!

Good luck either way, man!

Time isn't the issue. I make crap pay but could still buy the replacement. Hell I spent $10.99 for the cleaner and lubricant for the spindle at RadioCrapshack. I have that kind of teach a teach a person to fish:give a person a fish mentality. My father is a clockmaker. Fixing things is in my blood. My blood is also inside this xbox a little. (Careful reaming larger holes for xclamp!   happy.gif ) I'll take the long difficult approach over the quick fix. Call me hardheaded but if this doesn't make sense I can't explain it really much farther.

Anyhow..

I'm inexperienced currently in flashing and don't want to worry about getting it banned on Live also are main reason for me passing on a replacement for now too. If after all options are exhausted then I'll give in. Thanks for the advice/encouragement nonetheless uradodah.  smile.gif

FYI, I have lowered the resistance on a lite-on to 4.6 ohms without issue.  I'm not sure if we have a definitive burn-out number yet.  If I get there I'll post it.

Had it down to 4.4. It stopped booting discs and would just display "reading" at a constant speed forever.  Also, the drive wasn't instantly responsive to an eject command.  It would wait until it was good and ready to give up reading before it decided to open.

I put it back up to 5.2 and it started acting normal and booting discs again.  Not sure if it's safe to say that 4.6 is the low number for lite-ons, since it's just this drive so far, and it didn't fail completely.  If anyone comes across the same behavior please let me know.  Or if you've had a similar experience in the past.  Thanks!

For Liteon drives there so few there who had problems. I had small problems, but only with traxdata discs, lousy/cheap ones, but i did give a try.
Flashing the drive was a bit tricky, but did manage. All is working just fine with verbatim discs. Traxdata gave some reading problems so i tried to adjust the laser.
From 5.29 to 4.72 and ill be testing some time now before i go any lower just in case.

Image attached for the Liteon measure locations:

ps. Adjust pot with a friend, unless got 3rd arm.
