Trying To Dump Hitachi Firmware With 6421 Pci Card
« on: May 30, 2006, 04:57:00 AM »

before we begin just to state i have read almost all the tutorials (including all geebee's 15 versions (good work bro!)) and posts on the hitachi drives and i have been playing with my own hitachi to make sure i can dump and write the hacked firmware when it is released.

heres my setup:

motherboard has no SATA so bought VIA 6421 PCI card. no settings in bios for RAID or SATA. Fully updated drivers to 5.20. edited my own mtkflash for the card (not for my hitachi)(does it work on the hitachi me thinks not?)
powering DVD drive from 360.
downloaded slax boot disc from 'official' website (can't get one from rapidshare tried for days)

heres my process:

1. power on 360 with SATA cable from 360 mobo into DVD drive
2. power on PC and switch SATA cable in DVD from 360 to PC
3. Boot slax cd
4. At login prompt hit Ctrl ALt Del to restart (PC has no restart button)
5. Boot windows.

My hitachi 0047DJ doesnt seem to get into modeb and it isnt recognised by windows. when i go into device manager there is a conflict with the SCSI RAID controller with the VIA 6421 and i get the error

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

what am i doing wrong? any ideas?

well the way i do it now is the crossed wires method. That works with all 3 sata chiposets i have on my PC...

ICH5, 3114 and 6421L (pci card)

I boot windows turn on the xbox 360 and immediately flick my switch. Then i connect the sata to the xbox and thats it!

for the crossed wires method could you elaborate on the method a bit?

when i tried it i had the dvd drive powered by the 360 (obviously) and the PC off. heres the first wondering moment. do you have to have the SATA cable from the PC connected as you are crossing the wires or do u connect it after the 360 boots? if so do you have to have the 360 SATA cable in or none at all?

every way i try it all i get is a conflict in the device manager in xp, no 3rd drive.

HELP!!

for the cross wire thing has nothing to do with SATA cable since if you are going to do a backup obviously you need it all the time connected. You need to short pin 0 and 9 of the power supply of the Hitachi then switch the xbox ON and immediately disable the shortage then power the pc normally without the slax CD. Its very easy though you need to be very much careful as not to keep the wire shortened too much after you switch the xbox360 ON ( only split of a second ) or else you will fry the drive.

If its a conflict try changing ports of the cable or else try changing slot of the PCI card.

jethro,

im not hooking the drive up to use for backing up games i have a dedicated hacked dvd rom drive for hotswap ripping. I was unsure wether or not to have the sata connected when shorting pins 0 and 9, i had tried both ways bu tsame result only a conflict in device manager.

I am currently updating all my mobo drivers setc and possibly tapping into the wires for a better shorting connection.

still no luck.

took geebee's advice and lifted the tabs on the white blocks and inserted the wire into the hole then replaced the metal connector so that my connections were 100% looks like this

(IMG:http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f288/gazcoigne/Picture008.jpg)

then i hook up the sata cable with the PC like this

(IMG:http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f288/gazcoigne/Picture011.jpg)

then i hold the wires like this for a split second and turn the 360 on with my remote

(IMG:http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f288/gazcoigne/Picture012.jpg)

when the PC boots it hangs on the xp screen, then it boots after a while and no drive is seen. what am i doing wrong? i have updated every driver i could find for my system.

hoping the split of a second counts after you switch the xbox right ?

I would check as well for IRQ conflicts or as said before assigning a different slot on the mobo for the sata card.Remove as well any other gadgets which are unnecessary on the pci slots.

just took my 360 to my m8 plexo's house and we tried his mobo with native via 8237 chipset and guess what? same results. I think the problem is that the drive is not being forced into modeb correctly. does any1 know how the drive reacts to being put into modeb so i know what to look for?

You're supposed to have the SATA cable unplugged when you do the cross-wire method; right after you turn on your 360 and separate the wires, you're supposed to plug in the SATA cable back in the 360 dvd drive, then turn on your PC, then windows will recognize the drive

have done this already tried almost every combination of sata and power status.

latest is i have put a switch on the ends of the wires so its easier to short/break.

i tried it on plexo's mobo with native SATA via 8327 latest drivers etc. pc off, boot 360 with switch on, flick switch to off, drive ejects, connect SATA, power on PC, windows hangs, boots with no extra drive and a conflict in device manager.

still not convinced the drive is in modeb. perhaps the problem lies with my PCI SATA card although with nothing attached there is no conflict in device manager.

CONFUSED AND WANTING A SAMSUNG!!!
