Why is anyone even bothering with a dual firmware mod? What can that hope to accomplish?

At some point there is going to be a dash update. This dash update isn't just going to ban people from Live, it's going to disable playing backups with a cracked firmware altogether, so switching banks to a cracked firmware bank isn't going to help you any. Making a dual firmware mod is a complete and total waste of time (and money if you're dumb enough to buy one).

For a while, if you want to stay offline you can just refuse the mandatory dash update. But eventually Mic-rosoft will start putting it on game discs (like GTA:LCS) and require you to update that way in order to play newer games.

Sooner or later we'll need a firmware that is able to masquerade as the stock firmware.

ITs not that easy.. even if they release new firmware with a different firmware version the security sectors will still be the same.. They cannt just change all the security, if they did they would also have to update the CPU firmware to look for new security in dvd-firmware which is more impossible.. So, in the end it will be cat-n-mouse game, MS releases new firmware, some groups patch it and release it, everyone flash their dvd with new patched firmware..

The glue was already out long before this mod? I think its hot glue as it activates easily with a heat gun tip on a butane gas iron, just use a scalpel/hobby nice and heat gun to get it off, heres the alternate points,
i can confirm this mod works if anyone wants any cheap SST 39sf020a chips or high res alternate points PM me

if your saying its a waste of time, then your probably just jealous because you have a hitachi-lg drive.

MS can't patch the dashboard to make the firmware stop working, it doesn't work that way. they CAN potentially patch the dashboard to detect the firmware and ban you from live, but even that might not be easy to do. don't forget the dvd drive isn't a trusted source and can "lie" if it wants to.

i have no problem believing that its epoxy, i was just in denial at first, i think the "(alternative points)" thing would solve this problem for those who have the glue, and those who dont have the glue dont have this problem.. end of discussion, right?

Wait, how long has there been epoxy on the chip?  Even the launch 360s have it?  And both Toshiba and Hitachi drives have this?

Yet again, people are getting too worked up about this firmware hack. Im just suprised people have only noticed this epoxy now. It'll give MS enough time to bring out the dash update with the fix.

Dude, a small exploit can lead to the exploit we all want. If you want a full homebrew compatible hack, you need to search every way possible...

Tell me how this in ANY way is going to help/helps homebrew?  We can't sign apps, and as of now can't get around the hypervisor.  All this hack does is tell the 360 that whatever it is playing is a retail disc.  If this EVER helps the 360 run anything like XBMC or Linux, please tell me.

The point from MS' point of view is to keep this hack from being easy. They don't really givre a damn if a handful of people with the knowhow are willing to jump through hoops just to run stolen games, but they want it to be complicated enough a pain in the butt to keep joe average from doing it. Without the epoxy, this is already too complex for your average user to try (unlike a simple snap in mod chip), add the glue and it becomes WAY harder.
I would imagine a fair number of folks will trash their boards trying to get this stuff off.

On a safety note, if you try using solvents on this, make sure to be smart about how you handle whatever it is you use. Most of the industrial solvents have VERY nasty effects in the body.

This has already been stated MANY times.  Since we can now boot recordable discs, we can attempt to tamper with any data files that aren't signed.  This is exactly how the original Xbox's softmod works.  The font files or audio files were attacked.  Sure, this firmware hack doesn't DIRECTLY allow homebrew code, but it could prove to be very useful.  Knowing MS, do you really think that there is no security hole in ANY of its software ???

I posted this finding (epoxy/glue) in the other-duel boot firmware thread a few days ago.

It's not that difficult to remove the epoxy/glue.  If your careful and have the correct tools (heat gun/hair dryer, very small flathead screwdriver or pick type tool) you can remove the epoxy.  When heated it tends to pull off in chunks.

You just need to be very careful.  If you "dig" too roughly you could cut through the soft epoxy and cut a board trace.  These traces are pretty small and would be a pain to fix.

I was able to remove almost all the epoxy and get access to the chip in about 20 minutes.

I'm not convinced it's epoxy.  I've never seen epoxy soften up like this stuff did.  It also seemed too resilient to direct heat (from commercial heat gun) to be plastic.

Anyway, not hard to defeat, just adds another 20-30 minutes to work time.
