Firmware Hack Will Become Useless In The Near Future
« on: May 17, 2006, 01:40:00 PM »

Just to set the record straight on the firmware hacks. Yes they are fun right now, but as soon as MS updates the dash along with the kernel through NEWER games, NOT XBOX LIVE, the firmware hack will become useless no matter how many add-on chips for dvd-roms come out.

In order to continue using this hack you'll have to downgrade your dash, downgrade the kernel, and stay off Live. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think this hack's days are very numbered.

If you knew anything about hacking history you would know hackers have always found a way to be a step ahead of the companies, at least for playing backups offline. By the next dash update, who knows what further progress will have been made.

its cat and mouse
they release a dash update, a new firmware comes out
only way their gonna stop it is to stop using the vulnerable drives

m$ willchecksum the firmware. if this is the case, the firmware is modified to give the correct checksum

ok ok ok let me get this straight

so SINCE we found the codes location.. MS will now REWRITE ALL of there code and security sectors on all games and the dash (possibly making any older game) obsoleet just to upgrade and fuckw ith us?

ban us off live. maybe
make us have tp upgrade firmware from time to time to play latest games. most likely

be obsolete? erm.. doubt it.

but we've heard it all before. thanks for opening a flame topic. but mang really read the others as every 4 posts some ones stating wut u just said..

but thanks for your input. input is always good even if repetative

Even if MS could detect hacked firmware, which is tough, I really don't think they'd be releasing mass fireware upgrades.

There is too much of a liability when flashing a drive. Let's say MS releases a Live / Game update that flashes your drive... what happens when little Timmy's power goes out during the update and his 360 is a paperweight. MS won't do that.

Also, don't you think releese groups will remove the automatic updates from games they release?

Just like early Xbox chips, just stay off of live if you are worried.

**YAWN**

Plain and simple me old china.............

1) If you're ascared about xbox live.....dont do it

2) If you dont want to play pirated games then guess what....don't do it

3) Stop being so negative

4) MS will not be releasing a flash update, cos they will be loosing out on sales as soon as people know and 2, its too dodgy to flash a drive via live

4) You can flash your firmware back so less of the complicated words and shut la boosh, your making me fall asleep

Well I see more opinion there than actual facts. It's not negativity.. it's inevitability. Never said anything about MS flashing drives either. Prove to me there's a way to screw with the kernel and dash update. Until then, keep this thread clean and personal opinions to yourself. He who has to resort to insults holds a very weak debate on their end.

It's been said by knowledgeable hackers that this is as far as the hacking gets for a long time. I wanna see the hypervisor destroyed just as much as anyone else. But it's likely to be a long drug-out process. MS will stamp out attempts made to use hacked firmware in future titles. Call it negative if you want, these are the cards we're dealt.

Of course it's inevitable ms will take measures to stop this hack, but it's also inevitable that the hackers will be able to counter quickly and effectively, this is based on historical evidence.

I'm not questioning the 360 will ever be hacked again in the future. What I DO want to know is how to retain this working hack. I WANT TO be proven wrong. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

None of us will ever know how to keep this hack working and under the radar. All that can be done is to wait for M$ to play their card. Once they play their card we figure out what/how it happens then fix it to work again.

You have to remember though, you are asking about the future here. NOBODY has the power to predict what M$ will do in the future. All we can do is speculate, plan ahead, and hope that we plan correctly before getting nailed in an update.

Personally I agree with you that M$ will counter attack, it's pretty much a given. We just won't know how until they do. Also I've seen some people post around saying that "this hack is undetectable", I dunno if that is true or not but if they can access the firmware then they should be able to figure out that you've got different values in the area of the media check.

ahh the sky is falling! run for the hills. MS cannot do anything for the games currenly gone gold/produced. New games may incorporate new checks - we are playing chess here and no one is at checkmate yet.

If the hack isn't your pile then don't route through it.. simple as that - those who want to play with fire will get burned no doubt.

The hitachi drive hack is supposed to be multi-region when released, many will enjoy this as imports are by far cheaper than what wally's world sells games for.

As for the actual hack its proven to work - and will always work for whats currently out. Its days are far from numbered.

Just a note for the flashing - they could attempt to reflash the drives, it is possible - but knowing their luck they would screw up and kill warrantried consoles and result in losing lots of money having to replace the consoles. Although the consoles that out of warrantry might even that out, only if they didn't take a cut on each console sale..

Pure speculation here... MS could embed updates into game XEX's and force us to update to play/silently update and kill our consoles.. Its spec but possible. If this was to happen we are back at square one for any new titles that will be released. I don't know if this is fesiable though - they may opt to have it external to the games xex, to which should be easy to circumvent.

"Shut up" just isn't going to cut it around here..  I AM right when i say the kernel or Hypervisor haven't yet been comprimised. Until then, bye-bye firmware hack. Unless MS doesn't plan on stopping people from running games on modified firmwares.

cerealkillajme your opinion on the subject is appreciated.
