How do you see strings in the xex files? All I've seen is a few at the start of the file, the rest seems to be encrypted.

yes thats true and they dont only seem so, they truly are encrypted! But i wrote "in default.xex and  kioskmain.xzp and skin.xzp". The .xur are indeed the scene files which determine the layouts of the various kiosk-screens, the .xus-files may be some additional localisation info or effects (like switching , blending etc.) maybe you have found more here... the rest are normal pngs and some wma´s for sound-effects i think.  I didnt try to load other files with the DownloadItemPath-command but i think most likely you will get the usual "disc dirt or wrong region" message... all tests so far make me believe that besides ms crafted the kiosk files in a hurry to get it out, they really thought about some security restrictions to open the doors not to wide for simple attacks...

Cheers...

As far as i could see in all the strings in default.xex, kioskmain.xzp and skin.xzp i think are only theme-related for copiing them to the memcard. As mentioned in a post earlier there are some more scenes which can be activated by the DisplayScene-command in the kiosk.ini. Sometimes this works, sometimes you receive the "Disc is dirt or wrong region" message. You can reference all demos, videos, and images by game:\ or d:\ and the integrated ones in kioskmain.xzp and skin.xzp by using app:\ and the corresponding names found via stringparse with a hexeditor (you have to filter all the x00s between the characters). That seems more or less everything thats possible with the kioskdashboard. I have tried mostly all combinations of other pathnames (a through z, hd, hdd, usb, flash and others), but they either dont work or getting you to the "Disc is dirt or wrong region" message...

so by now all you can do is a nice little KioskDemo which is showing various selfmade images, texts and playing wmv/wmv-hd videos.. playing the kingkong, hexic, kameo and Cod2 demos, showing some simple flashanimations... and copiing the five available themes to your memcard... thats it!!!

Maybe the shaderprogramming leads to somewhere new... (bit frustrated right now after burning a hell lot of cds/dvds...)
I think you have missed the point of my post  wink.gif  I am well aware of what we currently know about the kiosk disc (check some of my other posts). But we don't know what we don't know.

I don't believe MS would build a mem slot in all it's kiosks just for a few themes. I am sure down the road you may be able to download say a trailer for the demo you are playing in Toys R Us that ties in with a movie etc.

I also think MS coded the kiosk xex to be flexible enough for the marketing guys to get all types of media out to users without live.

I don't see how "Copy Video"  or "Download Trailer" is theme related. But hey you maybe right.

I will have a play today and see what I can find.

you are right, never mind, was a bit late yesterday, i was just a bit frustrated after all the "hype" in the beginning, coming back to reality or ground now...

Could be, i have to check this out at my local dealer (electronics market) what exactly the kiosk looks and what version of kioskdisc they have running there... maybe a tip for others out there: go to your dealer and look what demo/kiosk-disc version they got running...

Sure marketing guys want always throw their message into your homes... biggrin.gif btw. without live you miss an essential part of the nextgen-experience... the chat and online-gaming and their well integration (wirelesscontroller with headset) is one of the best features of the new xbox.

Ok so many strings in there maybe i missed the two.. my fault...

if i have a litte time later i try harder to find more of interest...

cheers...

I've done a bit more testing today. It is now clear that the 360 verifies the signature of any theme downloaded through the DownloadItemPath command. Any change to the themes makes the download fail. (Somebody have probably already tested this, but I didn't see it mentioned yet.)

sad.gif Oh well, there goes my hopes of custom themes!

Well not all the time. If you change the internal name of the theme then the transfer will fail. But I have swapped out images and got it to copy to mem card and then mem card to xbox. You can even select  the modded skin in the dash and load it, but... the replaced image does not get displayed LOL

This sounds strange. Are you sure you are actually transfering the edited file and not just the original unmodified one? Which skin and which offsets into the file have you tried with?

*almost* done with the imgextractor that lets you swap images...it seems like the image swap is working, the problem i have is with the extraction which generates the file needed for replacing the images inside.  when it hits split data, my  locations are not calculating right.  after that, should be good to go smile.gif  whether or not the files will work on the 360 beats me though.

the way it works:
check off that you want to create a png replacement report
choose the file to extract images from
--program extracts and creates report.
then you can modify the images it extracted (or save overtop)
then click on the png replacement button
choose the report file
---program backs up original file, and replaces pngs in it

Extract the 5th image in Hotrod to a standalone png image
Start offset 0x03B000h to 0x061C14h
size 158740 bytes

Next null out the 6th image with 0x00h
Start offset 0x062000h to 0x095B4Fh

Now paste the bytes that make up the 5th image into the 6th image space
Start offset 0x062000h to 0x088C14h

Save file as mytheme and place in the items folder

Next open hwdb.ini and change this line:-
DownloadItemPath=game:\items\hotrod
to
DownloadItemPath=game:\items\mytheme

Save and burn kiosk disc to CDR or DVD

Now when you go to hardware > personalise you can copy your new Hot Rod theme to the mem card
Once copied go back to the main 360 dash and select your new theme

You will see:-
Xboxlive guide as it should be
Image 4 on blade 1
Image 5 on blade 2
Image 4 on blade 3
Image 5 on blade 4

what you would of expected to see:
Xboxlive guide as it should be
Image 4 on blade 1
Image 5 on blade 2
Image 6 on blade 3 (copy of image 5)
Image 7 on blade 4

So I am guessing what happens is that when it gets to our new image 6 it fails some check and image 4 & 5 are reused.

Anyway this does not prove anything. Other than the fact that you can edit the theme to some extent and still copy it across.

@ymgve if you have a problem checking this PM me and I will help you out wink.gif

No. If I change all 4 blade images it uses the default theme images for the blades but the modified themes xboxlive guide still works okay. So I end up with a hybid theme, xboxlive guide image from Hot Rod and blade images from the default theme.

idk if this has already been said or helps at all...  but rember way back when in the xbox 1 days... we used to have these lil things... what were they called.... linux business card disc... idk...  ran Damn Small Linux of CDrs... when inserting this and a DVD containing XBMC (with the default.xbe in the main directory so the xbox thinks its a game) it gives me that error saying you gotta have a hard drive to play xbox 1 games ( i gotta core obviously)... so appearantly xbox 360 thinks its a pressed game... maybe someone with a hdd could bring those DSL dics out of the closet and give 'em a try...

or is it that when you get a hard drive it goes online and checks if the XBE itself is compatible? idk... i'm no expert...
