Yeah but thats the point. The mame authors arent interested in optimizing the core so that games run good, theyre interested in optimizing the mame project in general so that all games are emulated authentically. even if it means having a 9.5ghz processor with super hyper championship turbo edition skynet ram. haha the xbox isnt going to have any of this, it is what it is. So we need to optimize the core at the point in which it is most compatible with the xbox's specs..

There is a slight niggle though... it's not a major issue, but it would be great if you could store different options for each game, rather then dropping to the menu and manually changing configuration to optimise each game.

That is what the vm.txt file is. That is how you save specific settings for a game, so you don't have to do it manually  wink.gif

Eventually vm.txt will have all the games necessary in it, the way the community is contributing right now  wink.gif

And about the whole "core" version debate, I guess I am just happy it is being worked on again, and hopefuly it will get better. On top of that, I am grateful to Xport and Noodle  beerchug.gif

Hey guys... just noticed something I think ya might want to be aware of... or is it only my issue?

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=248895

If anyone has a fix for this, let me know. Test it on your system, see if you're having the same issue. That is, if you feel like it, of course.

It's a major bummer, this is.

Yeah

re: MAMEoX freezing upon exiting a game - I've made a change where all cleanup activity is skipped and it just reloads the launcher.  This should fix most of the freezing issues during exit.

re: arkanoid returns - I'm pretty sure you had to manually set this with earlier versions, too.  While the game is running, go to the Options menu (BACK+WHITE) and select "Input (this game)".  Scroll down to dial.  For the first one, press A and then press LTHUMB-Left.  It will map it after a second or two.  Do the same for the Dial entry directly below that one and set it to LTHUMB-Right. Now "Return to Main Menu" and select "Analog Controls" set the speed and sensitivity to values that you like and you're good to go.

re: Namco System 1 games - this was a bug in the MAME core.  I'm actually rather surprised that it runs ok on the PC.  Regardless, this bug is fixed and will be available in the next release.  This should fix :

shadowld
dspirit
quester
blazer
pacmania
galaga88
ws
berabohm
alice
bakutotu
wldcourt
splatter
faceoff
rompers
blastoff
ws89
dangseed
ws90
pistoldm
soukobdx
puzlclub
tankfrce

Bosconian/Xevious/DigDug were a different problem, but they should also be fixed now.

Battletoads should work just fine.  How long did you wait on the EA screen?  It starts up after about 10 seconds.

Gaiapolis does indeed require mucho-memory.  I was able to tweak some settings and got it running, but it is completely unplayable because it wants over 300MB of memory.  It's essentially just reading/writing memory to/from disk for practically everything.  Nothing to be done about this one.

re: light guns - as stated in the README, if you're playing a light gun game that has a dark background, it's not going to work very well.  Second, you'll need to plug your light gun into controller port #1.  Point Blank and Operation Wolf should both work fine.  I remember testing those games.

re: metal slug 3 "work ram error" - how far into the game is that?  I played for about 10 minutes and it seemed fine.

re: 071 with VM - not likely to happen - it's more likely that I would hear about what worked better in earlier versions and see if the current version can use certain sections of older code.

re: control changes affecting everything globally - I'm not seeing that here.  I suggest making a backup of your CFG directory and then deleting everything in there.

re: MAMEoX sucking - I can certainly understand why the original developers stopped working on this project.

I torched all the files in the cfg directory... and yet the problem remained. ... is there a place on the xbox hd where my settings change that I haven't found yet?

I was thinking that it might be my box, but now I see someone else has the same issue. I'll see if I can figure out what's doing it.

Yeah.

That is what I was afraid of   uhh.gif

You know how it is though Xport, some people on this forum are 10 years old (or certainly act like it). Unfortunately these same people are almost always not technical, and certainly not "programmers", so they have no idea why things don't work perfectly all the time.  wink.gif

Just keep doing what you have been for the past few years and those of us who are grateful will continue to support you and your work  beerchug.gif

I was glad to see you still troubleshooting and looking into things. I have been tinkering with it all day, and have seen the vast majority of things to be IMPROVEMENTS.  tongue.gif

XPort... regarding the control issue.

I've gone and put my MameOX into an entirely different folder, torched all settings, and restarted... and the problem still remains.

If you go into "Input (this game)" you SHOULD notice that ALL VALUES now have a white background. If you change a value here, say, "P1 Button 1" to "J1_Y", EVERY game with a "P1 Button 1" will be "J1_Y." It's as if there's no such thing as a DEFAULT setting.

Conversely, if you were to go into "Input (general)" you will notice that all values are black, denoting that these are the default values. In the original Mame, a value with a white backing denotes a custom value, something that isn't there by default.

I don't know how this got messed up... but it is definitely there.

Please take another look.

feflicker had a good response to this.

im just happy the project is being worked on, and the fact that vmm has been added is astounding.

between this, and surreal v2 coming soon. the emu scene is still going strong.

*from the look of the posts, most ppl are grateful for your work, keep it up.*

I have a few comments and opinions about the new v84 release. GREAT WORK on the VM support. When the VM file gets updated with all the game specific tweeks it should be great indeed.

I have also noticed a few new, and unpleasant bugs. The control mapping issues that were mentioned above are sure to be a pain in the butt. Remapping before playing each game would be a nightmare. Here is the thread about the control issues.

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=248895

I also noticed the screen shots, and genere listings seem "broke" in this release. I started a thread about this bug here:

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=248892

All and all, I'm just glad someone finally updated MAMEoX. Keep up the great work and award winning support XPort!

PS: About the old core running MK faster........just wait for Midway Arcade Treasures 2 AND QUIT YER BITCHIN'!

xport, i tried setting up the controls for arkanoid returns and it even had the proper controls listed but even changing it did nothing

now for all of you bitching and whining about mk games; the older mames (71b and less) used a dcs hack to allow the game to play at a better speed but mame team decided to remove the hack and let the cpu to make the proper dcs sound which is why it plays choppy on xbox. if you turn off the sound in mame ox options, you'll see a big improvement. this also effects nbajams/hangtime and wrestlemaina

XPort I have put an example in  a thread here to help point out how to test the control issue:

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=248895

I think it is just a bug that is easy to overlook. It IS there for me, and I did a fresh install.

  Thanks again for the update.

i think this DCS hack needs to be re-examined to see if it can be optimized for the xbox hardware...that would solve a number of midway games in 1 swoop
