but someone needs to find the format of the update file first. Some one should try to capture the packets of the update file from live and then compare it to the burnable ones on xbox.com. MS might have less protection on the xbox live ones.

In other words compare the MD5 of both the live compatibility update and the burnable compatibility update. There might be extra code in the burnable ones giving away the way the 360 exepts a disk as bootable or if it rejects it.

But signing still plays a role in all of this and I think I read there is even a "handshake" between the 360 and Live's servers.

surely even if you managed to install something onto the 360 it'd still need to be signed and on the right media so this is hardly gonna be useful. we can achieve the same effect by copying files onto the 360's hard drive can't we?
