Cod 2 Demo Findings
« on: January 10, 2006, 01:34:00 PM »

Since you closed my other topic i will open this one to report my findings:

i have not cheked yet the swapping of the levels on the demo (i'm waiting to get a copy of call of duty 2 since i'm not into piracy) but i played a little bit with the files, maybe others have already discovered this but those are my findings:

-the demo will boot as a standalone game
-the demo will boot even without the sound folder (and some sounds will still works but in an odd way)
- if you remove the media (like images and videos or sounds) it still seems to work, in one of my burned dvd-rw it booted without the loading screen image displaing a sort of checkerboard instead of the same old explanation of the controls.

I think that the executable has pointers to the required files but no error handling if one of them is unreadable, if a file is missing it's simply ignored

i'm not sure about what are you talking anyhow i don't think it is possible to have cached anything since i always powered down the xbox and i started my tonight session with a backup without the sounds folder so i doubt it is possible to have cached anything.. the sounds seems strange almost like the levels files hold some basic sounds and the sound folder is only for the surround (if you remove the sound folder and you turn your back against a source of sound it just go mute)

EDIT: i have no hdd or mem card either

most cache files stay even after a powerdown.

if you have no hard drive/mem card then there is no way it could cache any files.

i know that some cache files stays after powerdown, but since i have no hdd i tought about something volatile like ram or the misterious flash..

well bad news.. this doesn't seems to work.. renaming the filenames of the levels just leads to a loop in the logos videos.. i will make a few more tries later.. watching the file paths in the demo and in the full game shows big difference..

instead the kameo demo leaves more open chances..

its possible the data files have callbacks that require them to have the right filename/directory

i'm not sure if i can get into details (maybe it's considered piracy dunno tell me if i can mod) anyway some files (not the executable) have some kind of files check, ihave to experiment a little more maybe i found a way but that would lead to a glitchy game (or no game at all)..
