there are many of us out there who like to use cowering's 'good' tools to name our roms. They name the files correctly as well as provide useful information like region codes, fixes, versions, translations, and weather or not it is a valid dump or an invalid/overdump.
these names are generally very long and many exceed the 42 character limit in the lame FATX filesystem that the xbox uses.
a simple (and probably easy to implement) feature would to allow rom names to be read off of the rom filename within the archive.
for instance, if i had a library of 6000+ roms each within it's own zip, gzip or rar file, i could truncate the names of the files in whatever way i wanted knowing that the name is preserved inside the archive, because the name of the file in the zip can exceed the 42 character limit.
example:
| CODE |
here is a list of a bunch of roms with names over 42 chars:
Battletoads & Double Dragon - The Ultimate Team (E) Battletoads & Double Dragon - The Ultimate Team (U) [!] Battletoads & Double Dragon - The Ultimate Team (U) [h1] Battletoads & Double Dragon - The Ultimate Team (U) [T+Fre] Battletoads & Double Dragon - The Ultimate Team (U) [T+Por] Battletoads & Double Dragon - The Ultimate Team (U) [T+Spa100%]
|
now, truncated, they would look like:
| CODE |
BattletoadsDoubleDragon-TheUltimate(E).zip BattletoadsDoubleDragon-TheUltim(U)[!].zip BattletoadsDoubleDragon-TheUlti(U)[h1].zip BattletoadsDoubleDragon-TheUl(U)[TFre].zip BattletoadsDoubleDragon-TheUl(U)[TPor].zip BattletoadsDoubleDragon-Th(U)[TSpa100].zip
|
however, if it read the name from the inside of the zip, it would still be displayed correctly in the rom selection list.
this could be a simple on/off feature setting in the options menu and i bet it would take minutes to implement since XPort already uses the zip plugin to read files included in archives.
what does everyone else think?
P.S. another plus would be to have the ability to sort roms by translation/language, region, version, or status. but that would take a significant amount of coding and is probably not worthwhile for xport's time
