Surreal 64 Freezes.......
« on: April 06, 2004, 08:51:00 PM »

ok

i'm running evox 3935 with a matrix chip xecuter 4976.02

managed to get "surreal 64" to appear on my lauch>apps screen

freezes when loading....when i power off....there is a real neat BEEP that comes from inside!  damned if i know what that is but i surely don't like to hear it!

any thoughts?

i believe i have my ini stuff set ok.....folder in surreal.ini and ultra.ini both point to E:\roms where i put my games

my surreal is in E:\apps\Surreal 64

and all my "stuff" is in that surreal 64 folder

uhhhh........and as far as my evox.ini  i assume it's ok with the autoadditem since the name appeared on my launch>apps list?

i actually tried to edit it and put the path in.....but realized i couldn't edit my evox.ini through the ftp.......so uh.....(newb) how to i edit my evox.ini???

do i ftp to my pc>edit>and ftp it back to the xbox overwriting the original file??

i'm kinda computer dumb if you haven't noticed.....thanks much for yer time!

does surreal write something to my hdd other than /E:/TDATA/a64fea57/surreal.ini that i should be deleting before a reinstall?

oi!  i can tell you this much.....i haven't touched that a64fea57 file at all yet!??!?!  should i have been deleting it every time i deleted it and put it back in?

another question......do you have to have ROMS in your xbox for surreal to load??

do the ini files all have to point properly just to get the surreal screen to come up?

you need to leave the ini alone.or how you got it.  It should read d:/roms.  and you can play them off of a cd too. or the hardrive

yeah.....after re-reading iriez thread yet another time i noticed that so many keep saying to point your roms to D:\Roms......but i figured this was only if you were trying to run your roms off of a dvd or cd......?

but like i said.....could you not get surreal up and running with NO roms in the xbox and whether or not the path to the roms is pointed correctly?

Upload a new .ini with the rom path changed to whatever path you keep your roms.  For example, mine is "F:\emu\Surreal 64 (Nintendo 64)\roms"

Next, delete the save surreal makes on your e-drive.

Finally, before running Surreal, update your bios.  4976 has problems with some emulators/homebrew.

hmmm....my cuz did get it to work and he has the same bios....

question......would surreal still load if i had no roms yet?

or if the ini was pointed improperly??

not talking about it actually working yet....but would it be able to load to the menu screen or whatever?

Im fairly certain it would still load, it just wouldn't get passed the loading screen.

Just give the bios upgrade a shot, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it worked.  You could have a different version xbox than your cousin or something.

well, i've tried everything i could possibly think of before having to update the bios as this is something i'm terrified to do :o

my cuz's only last suggestion was stuff about the TDATA folder.....he said to delete EVERYTHING in it before you put surreal back in the e drive

now....i'm pretty sure i don't want to do this as this is where my music is and possibly my gave saves????

so anyhoo - i started reading up to recall what the latest bios was and then saw a lot of posts about problems with 4981 and 4981.06 when i thought these were rock solid with no problems......then i see there is a 4983 and even above??

the absolute worst thing i could ever do is acquire a bad bios or somehow f up my updating the bios - i have an old matrix mod chip and i'm not even sure if the programmer for the parallel port works......so i could really screw myself by not doing this right or somehow getting the wrong bios

any advice :(

4976.02 was the most stable bios xecuter has ever released.

seedy: dont bother updating your bios, thats not the issue.

D:\roms is the correct path, and NOT the dvd-drive. When surreal is launched, surreal's home dir automatically mounts as D:\ , and your actual dvd-drive letter becomes A:\

There is only a few things that would give you a freeze/black screen. Is your time clock set? (to a 200x date?). Does your surreal.ini show D:\Media for its media path? Have you verified you have all the files (aka got the archive from xbins and put all the files there) ?

No you dont need roms for it to load, you should still be able to navigate the settings and about menu.

The surreal.ini only appears in your TDATA folder when you try to load a rom and says 'saving settings'. Just launching the program will not put the file there (i generally imply so in other threads, because 99% of people who get it to load also try to play a game the first time).

So delete your save from the MS dash, resend all the files from the archive you got from xbins, and dont touch the ini.

not needing to update my bios according to an xbscene guru = priceless!!!! :jester:

ok......i kind of did try stuff that you mention last night and still had no luck

haven't checked the time clock yet......is there only one that i need to worry about or is there one for the ms dash and one for evox?

thanks a ton iriez - your input on this subject is highly valued!
