.xex File Gets Infected With A Virus ?
« on: December 10, 2005, 03:37:00 AM »

so when i heard that a .xex file was realeased by micro**** for the xbox 360 console, i downloaded it and wanted to see what was in the file , so i changed the .xex file extention to .exe and opened it up in Olly and then proceded to save the dump, and the exe, so later on in the week my computer gets infected with some virus or someweird thing so i go to scan with the online BitDefender online scanner, and youll never guess what was infected with a virus , you guessed it the .xex file that had been changed to .exe , might not mean anything , but you never know so im including a snapshot of the online scan along with the name of what infected it !

Well another virus had just infected it. I doubt it was infected in the first place.

Not just this - a lot of different anti-virus programs produce incorrect results. I doubt this.

most virus checkers look for any out of the ordinary code on a PC, and im sure a 360 binary will look pretty out fo the ordinary to a PC

also, especially in online virus scanners, it will read most .exe files on your pc as virues if they are not associated with a certain filke.  such as key gens, cracks, and things to that effect. Its not a virus, its just saying its a virus.

Nothing to see here, the same virus that infected the rest of your system attempted to infect the Xbox file.

Viruses usually don't bother to check if something is actually executable, they just look for EXE, DLL, or other extensions which mean executable on Windows systems and tack their code on to the beginning.
