Maybe it just didn't fit inside the 16MB flash. Don't forget divx started as a hacked MS mpeg4 codec. Maybe that's the reason they don't want to support it.

Woah woah, ok, I know this worked before, 100%. I don't just make crap up. I ended up downgrading my machine though (had 1024MB down to 512) and it sucks for streaming now. With the 360 connected it slows down everything, something that hadn't happened before. Also, and I can take some pictures or something, but I know it was working because it thumbnailed all the divx files previously. Now, for some reason, it can't play them back.

I'm really sorry to have made such a claim and now seem like an idiot because it won't work for anyone. I'll mess around tomorrow and see if I can get it back to working, sorry to disappoint...

EDIT: Honestly, I could've sworn it was working. The only thing I can see is getting which screen I was on mixed up?? I have a horrible memory to begin with. But I could swear that it was playing just fine. This is going to drive me insane before tomorrow...

EDIT2: Well, my memory MUST be horrible, and myself full of crap. From the Media Center Extender FAQ, you can't allow playback of other video formats by new codecs on the PC, but new audio codecs can be added. So I don't what the heck I was seeing, but it wasn't divx on 360. Apparently... I'm still not completely convinced, but in the meantime, I apologize for misleading anyone (and everyone).

no need for divx compatibility on the 360, wait until a modchip comes out for that, but for now check out videora xbox360 converter, i have it and am currently converting beavis and butthead do america from xvid to WMV. it's been about 10 min. and i'm already at 67%, definitly worth a lookin into if you ask me... but that's just my opinion but i also have win MCE as well

Well a modchip is far far away and using videoora works but not good in my opinion.

Converting an already lossy format like divx only makes the quality worse and it takes about an hour per movie, I for one cant stand that...

But now it is a standard mpeg4 codec. Same with XviD.

Playing Divx on media center

Download Windows Media Encoder 9 from here and then Install.

Put your divx video in My Videos and then open up notepad, in the document write - mms://*INSERT PC IP ADDRESS*:8080 and then save your notepad file as *name of video*.asx

screen shot of what your notepad document should look like. (note ip address replaced with X's)

**for example if your video is called perfectdarktrailer.avi the notepad file would be saved as perfectdarktrailer.asx**

save the file to the directory of the video your wanting to watch.

Open up Windows Media Encoder

In the wizard dialogue popup box click Custom Session screen shot

In the sources tab change Source From to File and then browse and open up the video you want. screen shot

Use the other tabs to change the quality of the output. In this case we have set it as DVD quality video screen shot

When youre happy with your settings click apply and then start encoding.

Open up media center on your 360 and locate the .asx file and play it, you should now be able to watch it on your xbox 360 J

Guys, can anyone explain why the 360 will actually thumbnail the divx or xvid encoded files (by that I mean actually display a frame of the movie in the thumbnail) but not play them? It seems to me the ability to decode the divx file is included but disabled. Unless it is decoding the thumbnail on the actual Media Centre PC somehow?

Thumbnails are generated on the MCE pc, so it looks like its capable, but its really not
