« on: February 09, 2004, 08:24:00 AM »

i got this complete romset with over 4000 snes roms but the names on about 600 of them are too long to FTP to my xbox, is there any software to shorten the names cuz i can't be assed with renaming 600 roms.  <

actually, the complete snes romset is not at 6660 something not 4700 anymore...

i assume you are using Cowering's GoodSNES app to sort your roms right?  if you use the option "forcexbox" it will automaticly force the roms into a 42 character FATX compliant file name.  <

i'll look up some urls for his app once i get home and i'll post them here...

[EDIT]you must not have searched too hard, because the first result i got was this

it is a command line app, so if you don't know how to use dos, don't complain to me about it, it's extremely simple...  search google for some basic dos commands.[/EDIT]

no, actually it wont...

all it does is remove the inappropriate characters like ',' and '+' and thn it truncates the filename after 42 characters.

You'd think this works great, but once it comes to two or more file that have the same file name *up to* 42 characters and then very at the end, the program will crash.

for instance this group of files:
CODE

Dragon Quest VI - Maboroshi no Daichi (J) [f1].zip
Dragon Quest VI - Maboroshi no Daichi (J) [T+Chi2.7].zip
Dragon Quest VI - Maboroshi no Daichi (J) [T+Chi_necrosaro].zip
Dragon Quest VI - Maboroshi no Daichi (J) [T+Eng.40_DeJap].zip
Dragon Quest VI - Maboroshi no Daichi (J) [T+Eng.95_NoPrgress].zip

it will rename the first file to
"Dragon Quest VI - Maboroshi no Daichi .zip" to make it 42 characters.  Then it goes to the next one which is the same up to 42 characters and tries to rename it to "Dragon Quest VI - Maboroshi no Daichi .zip" also.  Then the program crashes and burnes laugh.gif  (i can't remember if it takes out the spaces or not, but it still crashes when it gets to bigger file names than this)

use cowering's app, it's much better for this type of task.  It'll smartly rename the first one to "DragonQuestVI-MaboroshinoDaichi(J)[f1].zip" and the next one to "DragonQuestVI-MaboroshinoD(J)[TChi2.7].zip", etc... preserving the end of the filename to keep it unique and identifiable when you browse your roms.

now you'll still be able to tell if you are opening up the english translation of the game vs the chinese one wink.gif

more translations, fixes, redumps (for poorly dumped roms), public domain, and a *few* previously missing roms (mostly japanese names i can't pronounce...)

mostly translations though...  so if you are looking to play your favorite RPG, like chrono trigger in sweedish, now's your chance laugh.gif

[EDIT]
it looks like i was mistaken...  a new release has been made even since my 6660 one.  now the 2.00 version has 6766 roms (roughly 100 more).
according to cowering, most of the update comes in the form of corrected misspelled filenames, better renaming conventions, etc...
[/EDIT]

The GoodTools work to rename into FatX complient format, but keep in mind that if you're uploading all types of roms to your xbox, not all the GoodTools set has the "forcexbox" option.

I have been using baRenameX for renaming my long filenamed roms that goodtolls cannot rename for me and like cypher35 said, it does spit out error messages when it tries to rename a rom the same thing. It also errors out when you have too many roms in one folder in your PC. But for the most part, it's worked for me when I've had to sift through thousands of roms before uploading to the xbox.  <

Chrono Trigger in Swedish...Now that's a challenge for me as I barely speak english (London based) wink.gif

Now here's the rub, the sane part of me says I don't need another 1000+ jap roms and others that are of no real use but the mad collector in me says GET EM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

smile.gif

Cheers for the heads up....

Barenamer is good and probably the best preset renamer there is so far but as good as it is those with TOSEC roms will almost certainly lose some part of the name or disk number etc.

For those mad enough for a challenge I suggest Renamemaster from

http://jackass.arsware.org/

It's free and very very easy to use but does rely on you doing the hard work, I use Barenamer to highlight the illegal files and then attack them with renamemaster so I get a sensible name at the end of the day.

A must for those renaming disk based systems like Amiga etc...  <

I've been lucky / spoilt by the joys of relax sharing (thanks to Xport etc) so renaming has only been a real issue for using UAE-X (here's hoping for possible new management / Co-op management on this emu).

I used to sit renaming on the fly ala ftp but with TOSEC stuff it was literally every rom / disc so I just sat down with renamemaster and removed / edited with that.  <

you are correct... not all of the good tools have this option.  I know for sure that the bigger collections (SNES, Genesis, Atari 2600) all have it.  Last i checked there still wasn't one for the NES which has 8000+ entrys.  grrrrrr.  i'll see if i can compile a list of the sets that have the feature later today.

as for the too many roms in a directory error, i ran into that aswell.  You can apparently only have a maximum of 4096 (1024 x 4) files per directory in the FATX file system.  Only a handful of the rom collections are this large, and i can usually use one of the good tools to filter through them and seperate them into folders (like taking out the bad dumps, overdumps, non-english translations, etc...  and putting thiem in an altrenate folder)  <
