just soft mod his drive , no need for modchip or any thing of the sort , unless he wants to play online (live),if so ,just dont mod it ,or else he will get banned , no matter what , if not now will be banned later , some methods helps to be not detected when online , but this only works for a while ,until microsoft updates their servers , then they will be able to detect it and will ban his console
