Do I have to install any firmware or anything for it to work?  I believe the modchip is in correctly because when I put in a original copy the center led comes on but when I put in a backup it does not come on, is this correct?

i had a similar issue, but my discs werent even spinning. Same message tho "OPEN TRAY"
i have a Hitachi 79FK drive inside my elite with NME 2.0.
i did my install, and forgot to fill the J1 jumper with solder, took everything apart again, filled it and closed it back up, and the error would come up, the discs wouldnt spin and it would just say "OPEN TRAY"
removed the solder from the J1 jumper spot, everything worked fine again.
so, DO YOU have the J1 jumper spot filled with solder?

Yeah I filled it becuase the install guide on NME's website said to, but it is worth a shot to try, thanks for the input.

Ya just a suggestion, on mine it says the same thing
"CLOSE JUMPER J1 TO CONFIGURE FOR HITACHI DRIVES"
is what it says, i didnt know what that meant really, originaly i had left it uncovered and a couple of my backups were working well, then i started to have problems with burns, but its been discovered now that it was the discs that it didnt like but the chip works good, i did go back in and fill that with solder once i realized that i had not done so, but upon doing that my drive would load the discs, and it didnt even sound like it was spinning them, but it would just say "OPEN TRAY" so i had to remove the solder from the J1 jumper spot, and the backups that i had that worked before worked again, also it wasnt even spinning originals, it was still saying Open tray.
i believe i have a diff drive then you, so it might not be same thing, but you never know.

seems like the NME still has some issues that need to be worked out NME isnt very good about getting back to people with issues, i've had my chip installed in my system for prob a lil less then a month and have had some troubles with it myself, mainly that it wouldnt read some backups, the issue ended up being that it just didnt like the discs, switched discs to what i originaly started with and they work perfect, its very very very picky, so be ready to put some patience into this, but once you get it all figured out on what works, stick with it, it seems like everyone has to do things just a lil bit differently to work for that persons setup, for me if i dont merge the iso and the ss with ss merge before using nme associator, they wont work, if i just convert with nme associator, i get a scrap no good, only 100% success is by doing both, an extra step and kinda redundant, but its what works, its what i will keep having to do.
be patient, its all i can say, you will put hours into tryin to figure out how to get them to work for you, i spent over 80 dollars on discs that all had to be scrapped, pretty crappy and kinda expensive process of trial and error IMO

Ok, I have just ordered a Sumsung DVD drive with Kreon firmware already flashed on it, and I have also ordered a Pioneer 112d burner.  Once I get these drives, correct me if I am wrong, I will be able to backup my games with XBC using the Samsung drive, then burn the ISO using the Pioneer drive and ImageBurn with Verbatim DVD+R DL discs and have a properly burnt and working backup of my game, for use with NME2 modchip, without having to do any of the SS.bin mergers or anything else, right?

I hear ya, I have now spent about 250 bucks on this damn thing all because team underdog can't backup their product with proper tutorials.  I don't know what else to do,  I have tried everything to get the ISO's to burn correctly that is why I just bought the two drives mentioned up above in hopes that they will solve my problems.  The only reason I got the NME2 chip was to aviod the hassle of flashing my 360 drive, but right now that is looking less troublesome then this.  Oh, I did have the jumper soldered across from when I did the initial install, and tried what you said about unjumping it, but still no luck or change of results for that matter.  I really hope that the two new drives solve my problems.  I am in no hurry to get them because i have another 360 that isnt modded but I hate when I can not figure out something and will spend all damn day trying to get it right, this one has got me stumped though.  Hell, I modded my Wii with a Wiikey and had all the in's and out's figured within a day, wish this was that easy.

still have to patch them NME with ss merger, the pioneer works, it sounds more to me like you need a new laser, I see this allot on samsung drive and older hitachi drives.

I do stock lasers, or send the console to me and I will get it working for you
