What Size Wires For Nme-360 V2 Install?
« on: March 03, 2008, 08:46:00 AM »

Was curious as to what size wires are recommended for the nme-360 v2.0 install? Is there a certain size or would some CAT5 do?

The smaller the wire the better. The smaller the wire the smaller amount of solder it's gonna take to make your connections. Just make sure it's a solid core wire (a single wire going down the middle). I believe I order 30 guage or close to that......and its much much easier to work with than "regular" wire. I've used both......I'm not sure what guage cat 5 is......you should be able to just eyeball it. If you dont want to order any just use the smallest you can find.

30 gauge magnetic wire from radio shack is what i used to install, also i dont think that it matters if the wires are touching mine are and it all works fine, i did take extra care on the soldering onto the drive to make sure they arent touching together there, but as it runs from there to the chip it doesnt seem to matter that they are touching eachother. hope that helps.
i also found that using rosin soldering flux made the job much easier.

I agree that AWG 30 'hook up wire' is the best wire to use for this type of installation. CAT5 network cabling gauge may be a little on the large size in this case. No doubt you can make it work, but the connection points for the SMDs and track pads are very small. Having installed a number of modchips into the original XBox and Wii consoles, this install was the most difficult to date.

As another member replied... "the smaller the better" as current carrying capacity is not an issue here. In the electronics industry, AWG 30 wiring is typically used to bridge breaks in tracks on circuit boards or where a track was missed in production for low power circuitry.
