Nme 2.0 Problems Problems
« on: February 22, 2008, 12:08:00 PM »

ok so i installed a 2.0 in a hitachi 79fk drive, did the wires, everything, put in a backup i had made prior to the install, and 3 worked, i created another image and burned, and now 8 coasters so far, i dont remember if im doing something different now then i did before, i did however remember that it says to close the J1 jumper, which im not sure what that means really, so i filled the gap between the 2 spots for J1 jumper
put everything back in, and now the disc wont even spin, i insert a disc and then it closes and says Open tray or something like that, WTF, is the NME 2.0 hella buggy?
or am i doing something wrong?
before i closed that J1 jumper thing 3 backups loaded fine, and all originals did too, so what the hell, im starting to regret going NME route and kinda wishing i woulda done the passkey and flash instead but hopefully i can get some answers here and get this resolved, i have wrote to NME contacts at their site and so far no responce from them so i think they wont be of any help at all, thanks to everyone who responds

CONT: i removed the J1 jumper solder that i had put on there to connect the two points on the NME 2.0 chip, and the drive spins again and will read those same 3 backups and originals again, damnit, im going to contact the people that sold me the chip and try to get a replacement one or something, maybe get my $ back and go with the key and flash instead

... am i doing something wrong?

I've researched this extensively... read many guides and burnt a number of coasters before finding that backups for the NME2 are very easy. Of course, everything is easy once you know.

So here is my 3 step micro guide for making working stealth backups for the NME2.

You will need 3 programs. XBox Backup Creator, Xbox 360 SS Merger and ImgBurn. Use the latest versions if you can. They are all available as free downloads.

1. Use XBox Backup Creator to make a 'Complete Backup'. Save the ISO file on your HD.

2. Use XBox 360 SS Merger to (i) extract the ss.bin file and (ii) merge it back into the ISO at the correct location.

    (i) From 'Tool->Iso Splitter', load the extracted 'Original ISO' file. Select 'Extract SS'. XBOX 360 is selected by default, but you can click the button to be sure. Select a location to save the SS.bin file (naming it SS.bin and placing in the directory you saved the ISO to makes it simpler).

(ii) Now that the SS.bin is extracted, you need to insert it back into the ISO at the proper location.

You will notice 2 text boxes with open dialogs (marked ...) named 'ISO File' and 'SS File'. Load the ISO file (not the .dvd file). You will be prompted that the file is 'wxlength' and whether you want to recalculate the mD5. Do not determine the MD5 or you will be there for hours and it is not necessary to create a backup. Note if the dialog says the IUSO file is 'NME 360 length', the file is already in the correct format.

You will notice that the MD5 for the ISO is inserted into a text box on the lower right of the window. You now need to load the SS.bin file from the text box just below where you loaded the ISO file. You will notice the SS.bin MD5 is also in a text box just below the ISO MD5. They should match and you are ready for the next step. Don't worry if the MD5s are coloured in red. As long as they match you are set. If they don;t match you need to extract the SS.bin again. Sometimes it doesn't extract correctly on the first attempt, but not often.

Now simply click the large button with the road sign that reads 'Merge and Create Layer Break File. This will insert the ss.bin at the correct location and create a new .dvd file with the proper layer break information for the next step.

3. Use ImgBurn to write the ISO. However, it is important not to load the ISO file, but the .dvd file that has the correct layer break info. Use Verbatim DL+R discs for reliability and make sure the program is set for DVD ROM Book Type (which I think is the default anyway).

And that's it. Very easy really and hopefully easy for you to follow.

Let me know how it goes. Good luck.
