Xbox 360 Updates

Hi, this might be a question that has been asked before but i have heard about a few xbox 360 updates ( Dashboard Updates etc.) I have never connected my xbox 360 up to the internet and have the NME-360 chip and was wondering if i need to connect my system up to take these updates or will that screw with my chip and prevent it from working anymore.

I dont have an answer but....
I  have my friends xbox i have no idea how it is moded expect that theres blue light from the chip... I wish to update the box but dont want it to die... Do it with my HD and not his??.
\I havent seen any problems yet i have seen some good reports but im hesitating
