Nme 1.2 Startup Problems
« on: August 04, 2007, 10:30:00 AM »

i installed an NME 1.2 a few weeks ago and it was working fine. i got one of the dodgy ones and removed the 470 coil. i didn't solder it where the 5V is. i haven't soldered X or Y. Backups worked fine for a few weeks and it has now recently just started not working properly. I think it is a problem with the chip turning on. when i insert a backup it says "open tray". if i turn the 360 off for a while then start it with a backup in it boots fine, but if i take out the backup and try and play another i get "open tray" yet again, and when i put an original in, i get the message "please put this disc in an xbox 360 console". Pretty sure this means the chip isn't starting up properly.

anyone got any suggestions?

What drive do you have? If it's the Hitachi drive, you might want to adjust/tweak your laser.

When you remove the 470 coil you lose the atuo-detect function of the chip.  This means that when you put a backup in, you will have to power the system off then on again to play an original.  Same goes if you play an original first, you will have to power off and on again to play a backup.

As far as the booting problem, you should lower your laser pot calibration to about 2.8  At least thats where mine is and it works perfectly. DO NOT go lower than 2.5 though, and I would at least keep it under 3.0

Well you probably need to change your ground point then.  What ground did you use?  The one recommended on the site?  If you did, you need to switch to the ground next to the dvd power cable plug.  Just google it or look in Board Tracker Search for it here.

i have used the ground point suggested, the one beside the connector rather than the one team underdog suggested. would i be better to use thicker wire for the ground and +5V lines? as i'm only using 30awg for them too.

Yes it would be better, but I am not sure it will make a difference because I have installed NME v1.2's before using all 30AWG wire.

You should try getting a replacement laser.  On ebay they should cost you only about $15, just make sure you get the right one for your drive (all you have to do is look at the laser in your drive, and it should have some number like SH-D08xx, with xx being the number unique to the laser you have)

if i solder a 220 coil in instead of the 470 will i get back the auto detect feature? because thats the real reason i chose the NME, its just any normal chip if it doesnt have it....

Yes, that may work.  I haven't tested it myself, but a good bit of people have done so and said it works like normal afterwards.

The problem is that this chip was designed for use with hitachi drives. It works flawless with the hitachi drive , however the samsung requires that you remove the 470 and bridge it with solder. The 220 coil is supose to be soldered to the + pad where it should detect originals or backups. But it doesn't work that way with the sammy. So a toggle switch needs to be installed connect the power from the drive to the toggle switch and the ground from the drive to the chip. Now connect another wire from the ground on the toggle to the ground on the chip. And lastly connect the remote wire to toggle ( connector in the middle of toggle ) to power on chip. Just switch toggle on for backups off for originals.

A switch wouldn't be a bad idea, you wouldn't have to power the system on/off if you need to remove the 470 coil.
