Samsung Laser Not Moving After Attempted Nme Install
« on: May 12, 2007, 10:13:00 AM »

Well, as per the topic title, my 360's Samsung laser isn't moving after I tried to install an NME 360 v1.2 chip. With the chip installed (using the points given on the Team Underdog site) the 360 wasn't reading backup games, so I decided to take the chip out, but in doing so seem to have shorted something somewhere as the drive no longer works (feel free to laugh at my expense here, and point out that if it ain't broke don't fix it  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)).

The drive's getting power ok, the discs are spinning away quite happily, and the laser powers up and stays on, however the laser unit itself doesn't move - i.e. if I slide the laser to the outside edge before switching on that's where the laser stays. The 360 constantly stays in a state of reading, or if the disc is present when the machine is switched on it'll revert to "Open Tray" after a little while (even though the disc is still spinning).

Basically, I'm hoping against hope that someone can shed some light on what may be causing this problem - all of the ribbon cables seem to be connected up ok, and beyond that I'm out of ideas... Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

First off, really check to make sure the power cable going to the laser is in perfect condition.  I had one that didn't because a SINGLE outside wire had gotten melted from my soldering iron (d'oh!).

Make sure nothing is shorting out from the power cable inputs.  Check the plugs, the SATA plugs, the laser power cable inputs, and the DVD power cable inputs.

Make sure the 5v point is not ruined on the DVD drive board, and that no traces are damaged, and that no points are shorting out.

Lastly, my question is do movies and cds play?  Or does nothing at all play anymore?  If it is possible for you to find out if your laser is working properly (maybe test in a friends xbox 360?) do that, but otherwise you may need a new laser.  Ebay has them for cheap, total price about or under $20.
