Nme 1.2 And Media Centre Extender
« on: May 10, 2007, 09:03:00 AM »

Hi everyone,

I have just got my NME1.2 installed and all is well with one exception, finally got around to setting it up as a media centre extender to my vista machine, vista sees the new media centre extender but when I attempt to set it up it gets as far as configuring the extender and just hangs for ages and then throws an error saying it was unable to complete, is this something I am doing wrong or is this a side effect of using a NME 1.2?

thanks for any advice in advance

Well you also have to take into consideration of the features that the NME v1.2 has.

For one if you connected the Network wire .. this is disabling ALL network features .. which is probably your problem ...

What i'd give a try is load the 360 with an original disk so that the chip is not in use and does not deactivate your network capabilities .. and give that a go.

What farkin said is correct.  Disconnect your Network Off wire that you soldered, and you should be able to set everything up fine afterwards.

If Vista is seeing the xbox360 as a valid media extender - I fail to see how the Network is disabled.

Think about that for a bit.

I use the NME 1.2 with my 360 and I have it working fine as a media extender with Vista.

Are you on a wireless or wired network?  Firewall installed? Norton? There are a lot of network issues that can cause the problem.

However, if Vista sees it (I'm assuming it sees the 360 if you just turn the box on without a disc in it - then you try to connect it as a media extender and it craps out on you?) Like I was saying - if Vista sees it, your network disable wire (if you're even using that) - is not the issue.

Investigate network issues first.  Make sure your firewalls are open and if you have norton - make sure worm protection is off.  You may need to open the appropriate ports in firewalls etc - you'll need to research that at Microsoft.

Good luck.

Hi guys,

thanks for tresponses, firstly I did not have the LED or Network wires connected so it isnt that, I am on a wired network, no firewall so it isnt that either.

here is the killer, I have a second 360 that does not have a NME360 in it and that works perfectly as a extender so hence my initial question.

I will try using an original disk in the machine tonight and then try to configure it again (good idea Farkin)

thanks for support thus far

Thanks for the compliment on the good idea .. biggrin.gif

If the original disk does not work .. try some of the following questions I've rumbled up.

um, as for what your problem may be.. Are both the 360's extender's of the one PC ? I am not sure but perhaps you can only have one extender per PC ? I know when setting up the extender you are given a code, were both codes for both machines the same ? Perhaps they need to be different if otherwise. Are both xbox's plugged in at the same time, perhaps the PC doesn't know which xbox to communicate with ?

What do you mean necessarily by a wired network? ie: a xbox connected to the computer directly by a straight through cable? some more details on your home setup could also help.

These are just some questions that popped right into my head when i read your post.

Hey Farkin,

ok, to answer a few of your questions...

Are both the 360's extender's of the one PC
YES

were both codes for both machines the same
NO

Are both xbox's plugged in at the same time
NO (I can only be in one place at a time!!)  biggrin.gif

What do you mean necessarily by a wired network
My XBOX is ethernet to a network hub which the PC is also connected to

for reference the other xbox connects wirelessly to a wireless access point which is connected to the same hub
I will actually try the wireless adapter in the wired xbox to see if that makes any difference as well.

update to follow..........................

Alright, so I am trying to create a picture in my head of how your network is currently setup.

First you say that you have one computer which is connected to your hub. (understood)

Then you have your second Xbox when it is connect, connecting via wireless.

I believe you problem may lie with your network setup. If i understand correctly you have your modem which is then connected to your Hub which then feeds your router?

If this is the case, try changing it around and connecting the modem to the router and the hub into the router instead. The router will give you the full bandwidth of your line and not limit you to low speeds that the hub will.

As for why this may be the problem I'm not sure exactly as i do not know your current setup but it would depend on if your computer is connect into the router (wired or wireless) or connected into the hub. I'm assuming you probably have it connected into the router, which is good but then you have your xbox connect to your hub which is probably your conflict.

I'm not 100% sure on the above, as i do not know you current situation perfectly.

But i would give it a try and let me know how everything works out, i will continue to give you idea's if needed.
