Nme 1.1 Installing Problem. Fried My Drive
« on: April 29, 2007, 05:54:00 AM »

Hello everybody,

Yesterday I started with installing my chip in the drive. It didn;t work. I checked all connections and all were good. Removed the chip, it worked fine. Then I resoldered the chip in, and checked all points again 2 times. It had to be good. Then when I powered it up, suddenly it smelled fried. I looked and the big square chip is a little melted. I didn;t know for sure if this was always the case, but then i saw the top casing of the drive and it became a little brown. So I guess that my defective NME chip fried the big chip of my dvd drive.

What do I do now? I do not have the firmware code of my drive. I only have a laptop so I didn;t have the oppurtunity to backup that. I have a hitachi rom59. What do I have to do? I really hope that there is a solution left, because otherwise it would really be a pity (if I have to buy a new console).

All the help is welcome.

Thank you very much in advance.

Willem.

Well, you could try going to www.foundmy.com and they will repair it for $45.

Anyway, are you absolutely sure you soldered the wires properly?  The only thing I could think of that would fry your board/chips that bad would be if you soldered it to the wrong voltage point, or if the chip was shorting out with something on the board (other circuits or chips maybe).

Hey there,

I was absolutely 100% sure that it was soldered correctly. Too bad... I hope to find a solution in the Netherlands who can help me fix it... Thanks anyway!!

wow?

The chip isn't even connected to the larger IC. Unless u meant the SST chip it is connected to? And then.. u must have done something wrong or something was shorting out. The worst i've seen is the +5 gets soldered to the +12 and fries the NME chip....

If the SST chip was ok, there are people on the boards with the hardware to remove and dump the firmware so u can get your key and flash it into a new drive...

Wow....

Hmm, strange. Could it be the laser tweaking? I put my laser to 2,69 according to team underdog tutorial. Maybe there went something wrong that fried the big chip?

Well I only brought my laser down to 3.00 (Hitachi 59) and it works great.  But it does sound a lot like the 12v connection, because that is all I could think of that would cause it to actually melt/burn!

Where did you place the chip though?  This confuses me because, like ydgmms said, the bigger chip you are talking about should have nothing connected to it.  All the soldering is done on the SST chip.
