Any Alternate 5v Point For Nme V1.2?
« on: March 27, 2007, 06:49:00 AM »

I was installing my NME V1.2 and then the wire I soldered to the 5v point popped off the DVD board, ripping the solder joint with it.  It wont solder back on, and the trace that led to the point is under the epoxy and too small anyway for a good connection (for me anyway).

Is there any alternate 5v point on the DVD drive board?

I have looked in the guides, all they say is that there is one, but not where it is.

Well, upon searching more, I have found at least 2 5v points (tho I have not tested them myself yet)

1- The third leg on the top of the SST chip counting from the right.

2- The small brown cap that is right next to the original 5v point.

Any others?  Ill keep looking.

Any luck with those +5v points? I'm in the same boat as you and wondering if this is at all possible.

Kind regards,

OK, I have cleared most of this up.

The two points I mentioned above are correct.  They are alternate 5v points!

BUT, the problem is this, if you, like me, have had your orginal 5v point "pop" off the board, then you must solder a small wire from the capasitor that was right next to the original 5v point to the 3rd leg from the right on top of the SST chip.  Why?  Because if your solder joint popped off of the board, then you have ruined the trace that went from the cap to the 3rd leg on the chip, meaning it wont get proper power.

Actually I didn't ruin the trace...I was worried about removing the epoxy on that spot, so in advance looking for an alternative.

So this means I should be able to use the third leg on the SST from the right, correct?

Kind regards,

Marius

PS...did you fix yours with the bypass from the cap?

Yes, I was able to fix mine by soldering from the cap to the 3rd leg.

But I have a question, how is it possible that you have not ruined the trace if your original 5v point popped off?  See, there is a TINY trace going from that capisitor to the original 5v point, then from there to the 3rd leg on the chip.  If your 5v point popped off like mine did, then the cap is no longer connected to the 3rd leg.

If you dont want it popping off the old 5V spot, then test to see if you installed the chip correctly, and if you are planning on keeping this thip in long terms, then hot glue the wiring points, cause all of them are pretty easy to snap off. But that is after you have thourghouly checked that you have installed your NME v1.2 correctly. And that means with both the backup boots, and the originals.

I actually never scraped the black epoxy of the print board. The legs of the chip had only a thin layer of epoxy on it and were easier to scrap and solder on to. I figured their had to be an alternate 5v point. I did solder it to that leg as well and works great. The ground point was also easy on the connector for the serial cable, so I didn't have to take the ground from the cap. Worked like a charm and a lot more solid than those finnicky trace points.
