Nme 1.2 And Hitachi 47dj - "unplayable Disc"
« on: March 05, 2007, 05:55:00 PM »

I have a Hitachi 0047dj drive and I just put in a NME 1.2 chip from modchip.ca.  I checked all the points with a multimeter before closing it up and they were all good.  I then tried to start it up and now when I try to play a disc it says "Unplayable Disc" on the little bar thing at the bottom.  This happens with originals and backups; I've tried about ten different original discs and they all do the same thing.  I went back in and checked every point with a multimeter, putting one end on the point on the NME chip and the other on the SST chip and they all were fine.  I closed it up again and tried it again, and got the same thing; neither originals nor backups will play, it simply says "Unplayable Disc".  I went in and disconnected the power wire and then tried an original disc and that booted up fine!

I've done some research on the unplayable disc error and the only fix I can find to that is to buy a new laser.  However, it is obviously not the laser since it works fine when the chip is not hooked up.  Should I try the 470 thing?

Did you adjust your laser?

Did you install the coil required for your drive?

Did you test for shorts? (Not just one point to another but across points)

I think you didn't do one of those.

I had adjusted the laser down to 2.6k, when I first got the error I put it back up to where it was originally (3.160k).  Yes, I installed the coil that came with the chip.  I also checked for shorts across wires and couldn't find any; I'll check again though just to be sure...

the thing with the 470 thing is it seems to affect Samsungs not Hitachis. though it COULD possibly affect Hitachis as well.

The other thing is, it doesn't spit out an Unplayable Disc error, it spits out the "Please insert this disc...." error.

I doubt thats the problem. but if after you've checked *everything* ... carefully remove it and see. If it doesnt help, put it back because its something else.

Ok, I removed the 470 from the chip and tried it and it still does the exact same thing.  Next I guess I'll take the chip and wiring completely out and redo it all and see how that goes...

Yeah I was pretty sure it wasn't a 470 caused error. Since that error gives you a Please insert this disc message...not the Unplayable disc.

I'm betting you have a short somewhere. Your best bet is to start all over. Trust me, I've had to do that a few times on some installs. The points involved in a Hitachi/NME1.2 install are SOO close, its crazy. Read the guide, try my tip. Of course...<disclaimer here>

Did you check all the instructions on the nme-360 web site? You should check the full instructions and all the problems associated with it on the site.

For your problem, which I've seen many people have, is that maybe you didn't patch your backups with the program given on the nme-360 site?

I think I found the problem, if someone can confirm.  I was starting to redo the install, and after I had attached the wires to the chip (before soldering them to the drive itself) I was checking each one with a multimeter.  When I touched one multimeter point to the +5V pad on the chip and the other to the end of the wire, it didn't beep, meaning there is no connection.  Upon further investigation, it appears that the coil that modchip.ca sent with the chip does not have continuity from one side to the other!

It's a mint-green resistor with what looks like a brown ring and two dark red or orange rings.  I'm assuming the fact that the resistor has no connection from one side to another is what the problem is, am I correct?  And where can I get a good one?

can you post a picture of it?

I was under the impression that the coil that came with nme1.2s for Hitachi would look similar to the 470 coil, but with 220 on it.?

Well if that's true then I've definitely found the problem.  Nothing like that came with mine at all.

This is the thing that came with mine -
