Nme 360 1.2 Hitachi 59dj Install Problems
« on: December 28, 2006, 02:15:00 PM »

Hello All,

I have a pair of NME 360 Rev 1.2 Chips and 2 Xbox 360's to Mod.  I have an expert soildering surgeon to help with the task.

Last night we opened the first Xbox and it was a Hitachi 59DJ so we began the 13 wire install.

We had all the right tools and and even a binocular microscope.  We successfully installed all 9 Wires to the very tight area of the board (there is no way I could have done this without very advanced gear), then we connected the ( - ) wire to the proper TP.

Then we connected the +5 as described on the manf site
"The NME-360 v1.2 comes with a small SMD part (coil). This coil is only required for Hitachi 46/47/58/59 DJ drives.
Solder the coil with one side to the 5V point of the chip and to the other side solder the wire which then leads to the 5V point of the DVD drive. "

Now after making sure that all connections are exactly were they belong we put the system back together then tested it with an original and a backup I made with my PC and a special Sammy drive of my NHL07 game.

THe original booted fine,  I ejected it and put the backup in and it came up with the "try putting this disc in an xbox"...yada..yada screen,  I pushed the eject button then removed the disc and pushed eject to close the tray and it did nothing.   Rebooted the 360 and an error 67 or 64 cant remember exactly but it was the dvd firware error message.

We opened it up and the SMD Coil was fryed and the SMD comp next to it (marked 478) looked heat damaged as well.

We double checked and all connections were made where they belonged.

It was late so tonight We are going to remove the chip and see if the drive still works, the chip is most likely wasted though.

Does anyone know what the SMD Coil device (Marked with a 220) is and what it is for?  Is it madatory for the 59 DJ install?  Has anyone else had it burn up?

I was certain that the install was a success as the wires were perfectly soldered to the proper locations.  But all we got was a burned up Coil and the other SMD on the Chip.  I hope my drive lived through it as I did not see any warnings about backing up the drive Security key in case of failure.

I am hopeful in that someone may have some helpful advice on this matter.

As a few folks have already posted the Network Disable point that is shown on the Manf Web site my unit is missing the SMD on my main board.  that was very odd, but we did still attach the y wire to the indicated location.  Now with my system being a brick at the moment I am unsure if that location is accurate.

HAS ANYONE SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED THE VER 1.2 CHIP ON A HITACHI WITH 59DJ FIRWARE?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Forgot to state that we did adjust the Laser POT to 2.62 K  (manf site said between 2.5 K and 2.7 K) It was 4.1 K default.

Thanks,

pictures of you soldering on the drive, and pictures of the chip after damage would help.

I'm gonna *ass*ume that you may have accidently soldered to the +12v instead of +5.

Update:

I removed the solder connections at the chip for all the connections to the A-I wires and removed the chip, but left the wires soldered at the DVD PCB. (isolated and secured the Chip end of these wires)   I addtionally completely removed from both the Chip and the DVD PCB the +5 and - wires and the uncertain connection to the mainboard to Y on the chip.  (as I stated earlier in the post the Y point on the main board is different on my unit, it has no SMD attached at the point)

After doing so, my Xbox works perfectly once again with original discs.

ydgmms-->
I am certain that the +5V line went to the + point on the DVD PCB just above the - point as indicated on the manf pic, it and the ( - ) line attached to the TP on the far right were the only easy solder points in this install.  But that is in fact a brilant deduction, but that was not the issue.  Now if that + on the Hitachi 59DJ is a 12 V line then it is the instructions that are at fault.

I can take a pic of the DVD when I open it up again this weekend.  I will try to attach a pic of the faulty chip.

SadisticEkoEz-->

I do not have a pic but where I attached the chip was imediately to the left of the drive motor on the empty blank area. on the bottom to the far left when looking at the PCB.

I will attach some pics later this weekend the soldering was excellent and exact. (We Used a PRC 2000 and a microtouch and a microscope with 30 gauge wire)

I would be very suprised if this 1.2 chip works on the Hitachi 59DJ  or else I just got a bad chip.

I have another NME 360 1.2 but I am afraid to install it until I hear that another 59DJ has been succesfully installed.

The Y wire issue is very strange and I would expect an update from Team underdOg ASAP on that issue.

Any Ideas?

Update 2:

I Installed my 2nd Chip that I ordered for the other 360 in the exact same drive and it is working perfectly, I did not connect the Network Disable (Y)  or the LED Activity (X) because I am waiting on the Dog Pound to way in about the location of the (Y) wire with the absence of the SMD at the Main board Point.

So I guess that the first chip I had was defective.  I will have to message FoundMy and see if I can get a replacement for it to do my other system.

I have had some mixed success with my Backups.  But some of them are working.  I believe I have got to get the technic down, then all should be well.

I am running an HP dvd740 which is an LG drive
Verbatim Media
2.4X Burn with Image Burn

Most of what I have backed up with my magic PC Sammy drive is working only a couple have failed.

Thanks to all who have responded.

I hope Team underdOg comes up with some clarification on the Network Disable issue on the Main boards that lack the SMD at the solder point.

Thanks,

I successfully installed an NME-360 v1.2 on a Hitachi 59DJ drive. This was my first time installing a modchip, and soldering at something this small. It took me a couple of tries, and a lot of frustration but I got it. When I was installing the wires on the points, I did manage to tug too hard and pull the exposed wires out. I might have taken about 3-4 of those points out. I thought I messed up the drive but I put it back together and it was still working so those points were connected to anything else (phew). I looked at some GLOBE360 diagrams and noticed that they scratched some of the PCB off to expose some wires connected to the IC. I tried and it worked! I have some pictures of my install but not great ones.

Good news to see that it is possible to install  tongue.gif  I have the 59DJ and need to mod it, but after dismantling the xbox a few times, down to the bare bones, it looks far easier to simply firmware flash it, although i would prefere the chip options as a have a mate with all the needed tools (and i've checked and i've got no epoxy!!)

Just for NME 1.2 Feedback...
I have just installed the NME chip on my Hitachi 47DJ and works every time perfectly on both backups i have made.(Following the Underdog tutorial)
Use a Coil for between the 5v connection and also don NOT attempt to solder the chip if you cannot find a lens that is used in hospitals or cellphone repairs..(Don`t know what is called:) ) It`s nearly impossible to do it without a GOOD magnifier!!
GOOD LUCK (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

glad to see some people have gotten good results on the hitachi drive.....
I gave up on mine because of the small soldering and my lack of skill w/ such small precision....
I just flashed the firmware and called it a day ; )
booting a linux disc is more up my alley anyway, haha

not necessarily right costas83, believe it or not I soldered without any magnification, I did buy a $1.50 magnifying glass at a dollar store and checked if there were any bridging but thats all the magnification I did. My eyes were really close to the board when I was soldering so I can see where i'm soldering.

Edit: something unrelated but just to let you guys know I used HP DL media, and I have no clue what dvd burner my friend used to burn it. I'll ask him tomorrow.

costas83: Yea I admit when I first looked at the drive motherboard I was shocked to see the soldering points were that small. I wanted to give up, and actually got scared to hell when i did the first wire and yanked the wire and the contact point with it. Luckily it wasn't connected to anything else on the board. I like having challenges like these and this is my first time soldering on such a small scale (thats why I'm studying to be electrical engineer). But yeah, its not impossible if you try it.

I would show you my install pics but I totally forgot to take a picture of soldering job. All I can tell you is since this was my first time its not as neat as many people's but it gets the job done. Now I want to install another chip just waiting for a friend who would want me to chip his 360.
