Just google the words you think are relivant and a handy video by ModFreakZ should appear.  The words should happen to be "xbox black epoxy"

why didn't you heat up the area near the sst chip? instead of the alternate points? I mean, was it easier? I would think it would be easier to remove the epoxy closest to the main points, the 4 spots nearest the chip.

I dunno. I haven't come across one of thoes boards yet. if/when i do.... *sigh* i dunno. but yeah was it just easier to remove the black area on the trace than those on the pins themselves (I would rather solder direct to those chips for a more secure job.)

LOT: 0641
TEAM: FDOU
Manufactur Date: November 2006

I only removed the epoxy for the parts where I am supposed to solder the chip to based on team underdog site, the samsung installation section.

Cheers

ok.

Got my NME 1.2 to work with a backup :-)

Damn this was hard:
Remove Black Epoxy,
Soder the wires,
Create the backups....

But its working (Well at least so far :-) ).

What can I share from my experience?

1. check your xbox before you order the chip to see if you have the black epoxy - if you do prepare the hit gun and surgical nife.
2. use 30 gauge wires to solder the points
3. I would suggest getting a magnifing glass - it really helped me.
4. get the thinnest solder iron tip you can find - this is really important since the points on the dvd board are not large as they seem on the images. they are really small so you want a tip that can easily access them.
5. get a two sided tape so you can tape you chip to the back of the DVD chip
6. solder the activity point - its not that hard and trust me, if you wont be able to play the first backup you put in you will think, damn it did I solder it correctly? and why didnt I solder the activity led? at least thats what went through my head.
7. if the first backup you burn doesnt work - try another iso backup. dont go and open the box right away, it might just be a bad iso.
8. if you put in a backup and you get the "insert disk to play" message, then put in an original and get that error message again. DONT PANIC :-) just restart your xbox with the original and it will work again.

Thats it from me,

Cheers

Hey dakotag,

Thanks for the advice!  But do you happen to have a pic of the dvd board after you soldered the traces?

Steps 7 and 8 are very important I am guessing that you must always do a cold boot to get oringals to work after chipping when you use a backup first

I used to rework smt and IC parts with a weller heat tool for an electronics company, the parts can take a hell of a lot of heat
The thing you need to worry about, is melting the solder and the smt parts "moving"

Actually, the easiest way to prevent soldering to an IC, is to use IC's that have the tabs actually underneath the chip
However, theres always a way around it, using sections of the pcb track for example.

BTW, thanks for the video, and info on the black epoxy guys
very cool!
