Team underdog made the hitachi installs MUCH harder with the v 1.2 chip.. I just did two last night... Secret to geting those wires down? Use 30AWG wire, position it over the flash chip and solder it, touching the iron to the point for only a second. Then TAPE IT DOWN. Then do the next wire, seating it right next to the previous wire and line it up. touch it with the iron, lift the tape and get it under there too. Rinse, wash, and repeat. The reason for the tape is to remove stress from the wires to the points to prevent lifting traces/etc.
I still can't get backups to boot though :/
appleguru is correct. 30 AWG wire worked for me as well. 30 AWG (Gauge) is the same wire that IDE Ribbon Cable for ATA Hard Drives use. You can even look at the cable and it should say 30 AWG. You can just pull apart the wires and use whatever you need to do the job.
It took me 5 hours to solder on this mod chip, lifting 2 traces myself. Very Very difficult and not for the novice. I used 26 or 27 AWG for the +5 volt and ground wire, which is what the floppy drives and older cd-roms/hard drives use. I heard somewhere that these contacts should use a little thicker wiring.
Luckilly after spending the time to solder on this chip, everything worked great and Verbatim DVD+R DL worked like a charm. Burned at 8x. I adjusted my Hitatchi 47DH drive to 2.915 K OHMS using a Fluke Meter. Tape is good to use to hold the wires from moving. Was orignally going to try and solder the wires on by using just 9 wires off the ribbon cable but then had to pull apart each wire individually because it was too hard to manuver other wise.
One thing I did do is alternate the side from which I soldered the wires to. If you follow the team underdog picture, they show that you should alternate the wires from side to side on the traces. This allows you to manuver the wires a little better I noticed. The dang insulation can be a pain in the a$$ to put right next to each other.
Double face tape does work great to mount the chip to the opposite side of the DVD board that you are soldering to.
I did not install the network and led cable, this requires you to run 2 wires out of the dvd drive. By not connecting these two wires, you can contain everything within the DVD housing which is good when your dismantling your xbox 360 if you ever need to again for some odd reason.
Everything working fine here, only install the additional coil you receive with the NME-360 chip if you have a DVD drive with a ROM version ending in DJ. Goto Team Underdogs site for more on this. It's kinda hidden under their picture of their xbox with the magnifying glass. Didn't even know that thing existed untill I receieved the chip. Didnt have to use it however because my Rom Version ended in DH.
