plug and play

I'm surprised they haven't had any legal problems with that.  I know xecuter and others did with the original xbox.  I guess it takes some time for ........... to catch on.

the modchips and firmware flashes do the same thing. there is no way to know if the ability to turn a chip off will ever be useful. with the 360, the dashboard is running all the time, its in the background when your playing games. this means if microsoft wanted to put a check into the dashboard, you could potentially get banned from live the second you enable your chip, even if your not connected to the net if its made to store a ban flag and send on your next connection.

at this point it is impossible to know how MS will go about banning.

i would say go for the firmware flash. feature wise you lose nothing, you can always flash back to your orignal if MS starts banning people, and its free.

Maybe you guys can answer something that has been really confusing me. Every time you burn a new xbox360 game do you have to reconnect your xbox360 to your computer? With a modchip do you have to do the same?

If you Don't have a kreon firmware based pc dvd rom drive (Sh-d162c, Etc.). You would have to hook up your xbox each time to backup your game with either a chip or not. With the kreon drive you open your box once and that's it.
As far as topic starter With the chip you take risks just like the firmware, the chip will cost you more and the firmware might be free. I did both and I purchased an nme. With that chip it requires an extra step to back up, you must associate your backup with Nme associator. I liked the firmware it was easier and faster. The firmware requires programming with your pc. The chip requires no pc programming but requires soldering of at least 5 wires. Hope this helps.

Sorry, one more question... are the backups associated directly to your xbox 360, or they'll work with other firmware modded xboxb 360's too?

If I use my 360 primarily for Media Center (HD) or xbox live arcade games, if I have one of these chips installed, is it a risk when I'm just downloading demos or playing on xbox live arcade.   I know they all claim to go to sleep when an original is inserted, so does that mean it's awake when you turn the system on go to the dashboard and never insert media?

I believe getting a modchip at the moment seems to be the better choice.  NME V1.1 has not have any problems with the Fall update. biggrin.gif

I have a hard time justifying a $50 purchase that offers no real clear advantage over flashing the firmware for free.

Modchip - $50 and works

Firmware flash - Free, and works better, can be updated

Best solution if you want an "off" feature - homemade dual fw chip solution with a switch, flash one chip with hacked firmware and the other with original firmware.

we dont have mod chips yet.  When people say "mod chips" it makes me think unsigned code,  like the first xbox mod chips.  What we have now are harware versions of the firmware hacks.

From what I understand of this is that when you do a Firmwire hack or modchip for the 360 you basicly can play backed up games or 360 games downloaded from the internet.

If I do not connect the 360 to the internet I'm basicly safe to do this?

Modchip is ony an abbreviation for Modification Chip.

At the moment you can only run signed code (because the main security ist still intact) - in pratice that means if you change something on the dvd (for instance make it region code free) the "checksum" of the DVD has changed and it won´t run.

The protection of the xbox is still intact (except the dvd rom).

A "real modchip" changes the complete security scheme. Then you can run any kind of code you want to run (Linux, Media Player, Emulators, ...) - you can see that on the XBox 1 where you have superb media players and a lot of emulators.

Imagine you can play all your Movies (XVid,Divx, ...) in high resolution .. would be a fine thing ...

Greetings

PS: To the flashing questions .. normal firmware chips can be reflashed several thousand times .. but for what? ...

Well, with some of the modchips, aren't you reflashing the dvd drive's firmware depending on whether your loading in an original copy or a backup copy or when you go on live? Thanks.
