I would assume that if a futuere "modchip" (and by modchip I mean something other than a dvd firmware hack, <other than the currently available NME>) were to appear on the scene, it would be best to reflash your drive to the original firmware as to avoid any complications with LIVE, if such need arise. Untill Xtreme firmware is safe on LIVE, I wouldn't worry, just check back on forums frequesntly to see if anyone got banned yet.
The Xtreme firmware has a stealth feature. From what I understand, the firmware doesn't do ANYTHING if you insert your original game, so I would stick to your originals for LIVE. I also think it is supposed to "emulate" an original even if you use a backup, but I doubt this is full proof.
If you were talking about your original XBOX, you simply have to turn off your modchip, or softmod. If I remember correctly, there is a way to be unbanned from LIVE. Ofcourse it involves registering a new account, and also changing your EEPROM, (or HDD KEY <I forget>) to that of an XBOX that is not banned and does not use LIVE, otherwise you risk that one and yours getting banned if they are logged on at the same time.
Look further into this. If you need a HDD or motherboard, let me know, I have a few lying around.
