It's MS, not the RIAA.

I couldn't care less whether the rumor is even remotely true.  I do wish all the pirating, thieving idiots would stop referring to them as "backups".  You know damn well you're not running backups.  If there was a mod allowing homebrew development while eliminating the ability to pirate games (a bogus pipe dream, of course), it'd be great for the scene - except of course that game piracy creates far more attention than academics and thus more hackers.  I hope 40+ wire modchips are eventually released, but I'm truly rooting against anything easier than that.  I'm just thankful for my happy dev kit.

I also feel that MS could've seriously decreased the demand for mod chips by building halfway decent media abilities in the 360, which I've found to be almost completely useless.

No HD upconverting DVD playback? wtf
No support for non-MS video codecs? wtf? I might've even picked up a copy of MCE had this been supported.

If those two features came standard, mod-chips would lose much of their value.

Die, pirates.

It's the truth mate

Wow.  Don't take everything so seriously - this is an online forum.

I'm aware that piracy is a powerful tool for penetrating markets - I did mention in my post that it has benefits.  That doesn't make it honorable, though.

An interesting point worth noting in the original posting is the "except for DVD" statement. This could be completely off the wall, or have another meaning - but judging from the architecture of the 360, maybe one of the first available exploits will be via the DVD firmware or secondary BIOSes rather than the core BIOS. I think, at least it the short term that hacks like this will be the most forthcoming.
MS has tried to make sure that the chain of authority from chip to game is not broken, and perhaps the first step is to attack the loose links in the chain. I doubt that all the onboard hardware fits snuggy into the security model MS has adopted.

Simple, next time he goes to copy one of your hard ernt games tell him to fuck off.

I try as much as I can to put money into the gaming industry, but usually it's only a few dollars. Because I dont have a job or anything. I dont justify what I do, but if I enjoy the game I'll tell other people about it. And then they will buy it. But the way I see it is, if I cant afford to buy games as I like they dont gain money. If I pirate the game, they gain a little bit by me funding the video store to go out and buy more games.

Please note, the above text is all imaginary and doesnt actually mean I do it.

There are academic models that prove that piracy is beneficial when there is competition (Sony and M$).

This due to network externalities, which means that the value (utility) of using a software package increases with the number of people who legally AND ILLEGALLY own it.
Due to these network externalities M$ has been unable to conquer the Japanese PS oriented market. Everybody is playing PS, so nobody is inclined to be first one to switch to xbox.

Mathematical models (which I'll spare you with) prove that piracy let's your network of legal and illegal users grow much faster due to the influence of pirates (word of mouth). When enthusiastic pirates tell all their friends, there are bound to be some friends that will buy everything legally, thus increasing your profit. They will also tell all their friends etc etc.

Moreover when (due to piracy) there's a large installed base (network) of users, the costs of switching to another platform can become too high meaning that the network is locked-in to your product, meaning more profit. E.g. in the Japan example, switching to xbox would mean buying a new console, mastering different controls and having no friends to discuss games with or play online with.

M$ willingly and successfully used pirates to become the number one operating system based on above principle. Due to incompatibility with other OS it was a race to be the first to acquire the largest installed base. If choosing another OS means you cannot communicate with the majority of your friends (word excel e-mail) you're almost forced to use M$ OS. Now that M$ has almost everybody locked-in to their OS due to their use of piracy, they start complaining?? Damn they should be sending pirates a percentage of their profits.

@the unprofessional...DIE?? Pirates. You are a sad person. What would be more ethically correct; wishing people to die or owning an illegal copy of some stupid game?

A perfect example of the is DirecTv... They had hackable systems for years the user base grew huge then they came out with a system that could not be hacked and 95% of the users became legal users

First: it's rediculous for a forum moderator to badmouth homebrew backup programs on a website that teaches people not only how to make backups, but where to find the software to do so.

Second: M$ was created off of plagarism and creative theft (mac os). These people aren't starving or poor, and last I checked, Bill Gates owns M$. If you don't pirate games or own any game development companies, leave these people alone.

Third: Last I checked, this thread started off about modchips, and what's going on with development. This crap just sounds like general discussion.

Clip from a certain Ps2 site:

"a group by the same name (coincidence? ) recently put out their XBOX 360 Boot Disk Edited NTSC READNFO-LiThIuM release on the net (NFO File) which was nuked due to being labeled as fake/non-working. Case and point? Take this news as we've labeled it- as only a RUMOR at best. Of course if their X-Box 360 mod-chip does indeed surface, then we'll be happy to update our Site News accordingly... but if history repeats itself then chances are good it will remain as only a RUMOR."

The Toronto (owner) info is all fake. I know there's no "North York" street and *all* postal codes in the Toronto area start with a "M". I haven't tried but i'm sure the toll free will be a fake too.

All the Newfoundland info is just the hosting company info.
