I am in the exact same boat, will let you know if I get banned.  I am going to buy and play Gears of War 3 on my 360 that had the exact same experience as you.  I got into the boot loop of the machine wanting to update, was able to finally get to to boot again by using the correct dashboard image from a usb stick.  So at that point my DVD is of course no longer flashed.  For what it is worth, I cleared all caches, formatted the hard drive and then recovered a gamertag onto the system and then tried to watch a movie from my home server, it said I needed the media update, got on xbox live and downloaded it without issue, and watched the movie.  I have not done anything else with it since, but I hope it works out.  I will buy a months worth of gold and have already pre-ordered Gears 3, will try to remember and post back my results.
