the xbox could probably run psx games (they run at a native resolution of 320x240 i beleive) to run at 640x480 without much lag, and full screen antialiasing, heh. aka, they'd look nicer, and its probably fun for the developers to code.

just a quick question, how are you guys testing the stuff you're porting? with a simple psx.exe, or is it far enough along that you can actually run slus files *hint hint* give an update! *hint hint* lol  biggrin.gif

Were testing our builds in a .exe format atm. :-)

The Dreamcast was pretty shit for true emulation. Heck, it couldn't even run a SNES emu full speed. With the last build running around 80% tops with a lot of speed hacks.

Xbox is very close to breaking Dreamcast's Emulator Record, Xbox has ALLOOOOOOT of Emulators for diffrent console's, and all of them run at full speed, DC 34% of them were slow.

and all of them run at full speed,

Umm, No they don't.

The Amiga UAE Port, certainly doesn't reach full speed even when emulating an A500. Tons of lag, bad sound lag, and some dreadful slowdown at times. And forget AGA A1200 emulation.

Then there's MAMEX, when even some simple arcade games have to have frameskip set to auto to reach a playable level. And forget about Neogeo ever reaching full speed.

Then there's the PCEngine Hugo emulator that has some dreadful slowdown.

MAME-X doesn't run some games because it simply doesn't have enough RAM to hold some of the uncompressed games. Metal Slug 3, for example, is 96MB uncompressed, which is more than the XBox's 64MB of RAM. Fair enough.
However, Hugo goes slow and buggy because the emulator it's based on isn't exactly full-speed or accurate. Try Hugo on the PC and tell me it runs most of the games fine, with no graphic or sound glitches. That's not the XBox's fault.
Oh and this little comment....

Haven't any of you got a decent PC ?
(In reference to PSX emulation)
What do you consider a decent PC? I got a P3 1GHZ with 512MB RAM and a TNT2, which I believe has 64MB of RAM. Most of the PSX games (emulated on EPSXE) look like shit because, frankly, my graphics card isn't bleeding edge. I try it on my boss's computer (P4 1.8GHz, 512 DDR RAM, GeForce3 128MB RAM) and it STILL looks like shit, regardless of plugin, configuration, etc (albeit, at full speed). This leads me to ask: what do you think is a 'decent' PC? Not all of us have a grand every couple of months to upgrade our computers, and the XBox would be a nice solution.
Yes, I am being a fanboy, somewhat. It's pitiful when you see someone down development because they personally don't like it. So what that you won't use it? A vast majority of the scene would use it, and you know it.

EDIT: Corrected the name of the MAME game I was talking about. Thanks for the pointer lucas.

id rather take an xbox and 24 psx isos on my hard drive around than my desktop pc and monitor personally. just my opinion.  tongue.gif  laugh.gif

Now I feel left out. You didn't include my glaring error, even though it isn't grammical. =-)
You are right about the whole 'an' thing, tho.

It's to (or was to) mock nasis x., if anyone even remembers that dude. Search for my prior posts, and make sure it's on 'Any Forum' and 'Any Date' or you won't see my mock-up.

I'm talking about the speed of the emulation, NOT the amount of RAM it needs. There is a HUGE difference and I think you should learn a little about emulation before making such stupid comments.
And I use Hugo, among others, and it certainly ain't buggy.

Second most dumb ass post I've yet seen in these forums.
So you are telling me that you can't run PSX games, and make them look great, on those systems ?
What a f*cking load of utter tosh.
I've just set up ePSXe on a mates Athlon Thunderbird 1.2 + Geforce 3 + 256Mb + Pete's DX GPU. And it looks f*cking awesome.
Perhaps you should learn to configure a GPU plugin before you spout such utter tosh.
I'm guessing you've NEVER seen 2xSAI in action ? Or the use of AA and AF in an emulator ? And texture filtering that smooths out the poor PSX textures ?

And what do I consider a decent PC ?
How about what I mentioned above ?
And I'm not talking about uber spec PCs, more mid level machines.

You can talk all you want about Xbox, but when it comes to complex emulation of complex systems, it just doesn't cut it and NEVER will.
And all the coding in the world isn't going to magically transform a limited Celeron 733 mhz CPU, into the power of an Athlon XP or a P4. And thats what emulation is all about, CPU.

The amount of RAM it needs is directly related to the speed of the emulation. The ONLY reason some games in MAME run slowly is because most of the RAM is being taking up by the actual ROM it has loaded. MAME only needs, at most, 18MB of RAM to do all of the bells-and-whistles any ROM has to offer; the rest is taken up by the actual ROM, as stated above. Emulation isn't all about CPU, but, as always, that plays one of the few important factors. You'd be surprised what a small processor dedicated to one task can do. And please, don't turn this into a flame war by calling my comments 'stupid'. I didn't insult your intelligence, so don't insult mine.
Hugo IS buggy, the developer has admitted this himself on many occasions. The sound on that emulator has been buggy for years; it's been a thorn in the developer's side. Read the changelog and the readme that's packaged with Hugo for the PC.
I DO know how to configure a plugin. At least, after sitting in front of a PC for a few days straight and screwing around with trying to make it look good at a decent speed, I ought to. Read the EPSXE forums; hardly anyone comments that they've got a game running full-speed, no glitches, and hi-res on a P3; this is impossible, as there WILL be glitches and slowdowns because the emulation still isn't entirely perfect. They just report that it works.
And please, if you're just going to turn this into a flame war instead of a healthy debate, don't respond.

EDIT: A few grammical errors.
