Need Help Fast!
« on: April 25, 2010, 04:46:00 PM »

Hi guys, I was just working on a JTAG today. Finished. Turned out successful. But after I've finished, my screwdriver fell off my desk and landed on these 2 points while it was on, ended up in 3rrod, sec code 0102, cant seem to fix it.

Please Help!!

0102 errors are a pain.

Trying to overheat it... (doubt it will work since its not a 'Real' RROD issue) wonder if it will jumpstart it...

Check all the traces between GPU and Ram. I bet you broke one.

I'm thinking he blew that mosfet since he shorted it out and that aint good. The board might not think it's having a power problem but with that mosfet out the gpu might not be getting the proper voltage thus 0102.

TRY Replacing the mosfet first.

Do you think i blew the transistor? Because the traces look good and it doesnt seem like there are any resistors missing. Although when I turned it on after overheating it, I heard some electrical interference... (you know, like the type you would hear from a 56k dialing modem.). Really confused, first time encounter with this problem...

I have a few xboxes laying around that i can get that transistor from and swap em, if thats the case...

Anyone got any tips for removing a mosfet?

Dude that capacitor in the red circle is blown... easy way to tell is that its swollen and not like the others that are flat

edit: nevermind.... saw the pic was just a reference board

i ahve the same error code.... I didnt jtag or anytihng, and i dont think i shorted anytihng as it works for a few mins, then pic goes out or it freezes.... sometimes its rrod with 0102... i did soem googling and read its sometihng with a broken solder or something....

You'll either need a high wattage soldering iron (around the 45w mark) and a lot of flux, or IR/Heatgun. Either method, take your time and don't rush it, otherwise you'll rip the pads off from underneath the mosfet/break the working mosfet removing it.

Basically, cover the mosfet in flux, if you're using  IR/heatgun you need a small nozzle and isolate the other parts of the board - gently heat at around the 150C mark, then step up for no longer than 10 seconds to around 300C, use some tweezers to lift the mosfet - if you slide it it may take other components with it.

With a soldering iron it's a pain but do-able. Let the iron heat up good and proper, flux the mosfet, get some solder braid/wick (soak this in flux as well), and do the legs on the fet first. Next gently press the iron against the main solder pad for a while, the flux should bubble and you'll see the solder run, lift it off with tweezers. Worth noting as well - flow some new solder onto the solder you want to remove, makes it easier to desolder (more is less wink.gif )

Yours is the start of a 'normal' RLOD - 0102 - cold/broken solder joint under the GPU - either X-clamp relace, or get someone to reflow the board for you.

Thanks Thwack!

The thing is though, I dont have a heatgun or a high wattage soldering iron... (my 15W doesnt seem to do the job) Do you happen to know the voltage off those pins? Because I can just jump some current from underneath the power plug. (if the voltage is the same) Got a resistor collection going on, so jumping from higher voltages is not an issue.

It's not that simple. I have been following this thread and i am not convinced it is even a mosfet problem.

Well it is that simple if you want to find out if it's the mosfets/caps on a power line - go over to xbox-xperts site, and in the 'diagnose error', click the 3RLOD box, and enter 0001 as the secondary error code. That'll bring up a link to how to test the standyby voltages to see if it's the mosfets (although this is mainly for the CPU one's it'll give you an idea if they're wrong in that department).

RDC has a thread in the hardware section of these forums with some of the voltages for those fets - I'll have a butchers and post back if I find the thread.

You can't test a mosfet when it's still in circuit, but testing the standby voltages will let you know if you have blown some of these - and it may turn out that the 360's simply RLOD'd, but eliminate the mosfets prob first smile.gif
