Having Problems With Getting My Usb Spi Reader To Work
« on: March 17, 2010, 09:14:00 AM »

Hello everyone,

I have recently bought a USB SPI flasher here on the market place of XB-scene (from hynix)

I have however been having troubles getting it to work, I have solderd the wires to the correct positions, but i keep getting the "cannot find flash controler" error on nandpro. (i use 2b)

I have looked on the forums to find an awnser, and by doing thad i have resolderd the wires 4 time right now and i am 100% sure there are no shorts now or there ever where (i always checked the wires with a multimeter before i did anything)

After all this failed i tryed connecting with nandpro directly after i pluged the xbox in the power suply, but it did not help at all un fortunaly (i tryed this at least 10 times)

Then i read thad shorting the data pins on the nand could help detecting the flash controler, so again i tryed this (the correct way) but again nothing happend.

So right now i have a perfectly good working Xenon xbox with a old dash  ready to be jtaged, but i cant do it...

Here are some pictures of my wires and the usb SPI (the usb flasher/reader is working fine, it gets reconeced by my pc as a LibUSB-Win32 Device/memory acces, ow i am running windows 7 32bits)

So right now i am all out of ideas..

I hope you can help me get this working !

Use NandPro 2.0 (not a,b or d), the original one, the later one's may have trouble recognising your USB reader.

Use single stranded wire... I've used wires from old USB cables and had the same problem. If you have any old IDE cables laying around, strip the wire apart and use the wire from them. Plus, your wires are surface mounted. You should at least have them through the hole.

Well the spi reader is beeing reconised my my pc as a LibUSB-Win32 Device (i have sucessfully instaled the usb driver from nandpro) so thad sould mean the reader/flasher is programmed right.

And yes i am giving the xbox power when i am trying to read the nand. The powerbrick is not turning red, but it stays green.

do you guys know some points on the motherboard i can use to check if my soldering has made good connections  (maby on the nand itself) , and if all else fails, are there any alternative points i can use for the spi points ?

Kind regards,

Your not supposed to power on the 360 (which is what is happening as the light on the PSU is green). You only plug the PSU into the wall socket and into the back of the 360 so it gets it's 5v standby electricity. Don't power the 360 on!

Yeah, don't turn the thing on!

Also, I've had good luck using the RJ45 coupler found in the LPT cable tut here on XS. Makes it real easy to disconnect and reconnect.

And right now i am ust intrested in getting a good read off the nand, i would have to make a more pernament solution later.

thanks for your comments thow,.. i am realy hoping i can get this thing to work,

But is there any way i can check if the solder connections i made are going trough the mobo of the xbox right
maby there is one or two bad connections....

Thanks for helping me !

My USB flasher was doing that to me today, giving the old "Cannot detect flash controller". Turns out one of the wires coming out of the connector on the flasher itself had come loose just enough to not make a connection. I pushed it back in with a tiny flat head screwdriver and its all good now.

shorting the wires on the NAND are almost never a good idea. You are a novice? If not then ignore. If you short it you lose your orignal nand contents then you're dead in the water. Without that cpu key. Oh no. It's burned into your cpu. You'll never retrieve it if you destroy it's value in the nand.

Hello everyone, ust a quick update.
I have recently gotten my hands on a second xbox (alwso xenon, but it has been updated by xbox live).

I decided to test if i could read out this nand, so i can be sure there is no problem with my pc, or usb spi reader.
With this xbox i had no troubles at all, and i could dump the nand without any trouble.

I decided i would try for one last time on my exploideble xbox, but again i got the same error could not find flash controler.

So this has me thinking, could there be a way thad the nand itself has a damaged flash controler from the factory itself ?

anyway, i am happy thad i now know for sure the spi reader is working as it should, so now the hunt is on again for an old 360 !

kind regards,

I got a USB flasher from someone on the board as well. Had some issues much like yours, I then removed all of the stranded wire they had used and replaced it with some nice heavy solid core, not sure of the gauge but it is just small enough to go right through the holes on the board. I noticed that if I solder the wire right through the holes there is a better chance of having a good connection.

I have only had one board give me any issue after fixing this.
