Apply Game Updates To Jtag

Here is a little guide for you, As always I(the author of this tutorial) am not responsible for any damages that may occur from this tutorial:

Note: You will need access to the files on your 360's hdd and be able to insert/extract and edit the contents of it as well.

1. Open up your title update(file name should begin with TU) in a hex editor and scroll down until you see the name of the game the title update is for and it's version to make sure that you have the right update(PAL and NTSC updates are different so make sure you have the right one for your console.)

2. Download Le Fluffie App and go to 'File/Open a File' and select the title update. Once the title update is loaded in Le Fluffie click Extract Package and choose a place to store the extracted files I normally make a folder with the title of the game then a sub folder that says Title Update and store the files in there.*

3. Now you need to patch your game's default.xex, that you extracted onto your 360's hard drive, with the default.xexp you extracted from the title update. Do this with the Xex Tool program, which you can find at Xbins. To patch your default.xex(and future games) easily I suggest you open up notepad and copy and paste this into your new document:

xextool -p default.xexp -o default.xex.patched default.xex

Then save the file to the directory of Xex Tool and where it says 'Save as Type' in the save options for notepad select 'All Files' and save the file as:

patch.bat

What this will do is create a batch file that will run Xex Tool and tell it to create a patched version of your default.xex called default.xex.patched so your original can be kept untouched for backup purposes if the patch fails.

4. Rename default.xex.patched to default.xex and copy it to the location that your game is saved in your HDD(game must be in the format XexLoader/XexMenu extracts the game) and replace the default.xex there with your freshly patched version and enjoy!

*Quick note: There may be other files that Le Fluffie extracts that you may need to place somewhere in one or more of the directories in your game. This will differ for each game so if the patch doesn't seem to work be sure you are also copying the other files needed that the patched default.xex will use to there proper locations in your game's directories.

You really don't need to do all this. Just download the title updates and place them in the Cache folder on your hard drive. You don't need to patch all the xex files manually anymore.

Reason why you shouldn't do what cRaCKwHoRe said is because after a while the 360 deletes these title updates because they are in the 'Cache' folder and will require you to download them again after a little while. This has to do with how much HDD space is available. Patching the default.xex instead will allow you to never have to worry about this happening.

I just put hem in cache folder easiest way, I have about 25 in there now and they haven't been deleted and been in their awhile. Problem with the patching method is what you gonna do for the other files? take halo 3 for instance it has default.xexp, with WaveShell-Xbox.dllp and WavesLibDLL.dllp and the waves folder contains L360.dllp and Q10.dllp xextool will not patch these files for you only the default.xex. Also xm360 comes with an option to backup the catch folder for a just in case but like I said mine have been in there awhile and never got deleted.

I would assume that at least copying them over the origional files would be worth a shot? Seeing as that seems to be how H3Unlock does it through patching did you read my guide? I said:

Which pretty much answers your question. Choose whatever method you want to be honest. I find that manually patching can be a good learning experience and can allow you to install mods and the such a lot easier if it comes to modifying default.xex or any other files.

A dllp is a patch for a dll file and no xextool nor just copying it over would work so that doesn't answer any question. Patching may work for single xex patches or patches that have normal files with them but to patch all files no its not going to work. From my understanding files would only ever get deleted from the cache folder if there was a space issue or the box connected to live which being jtagged the connecting to live isn't an issue.

Do you have any guidelines for when this happens? I have a 2 TB HDD and have never seen this happen? I suppose it could be because I have so much free space but I am still curious... never heard of them being deleted. That would be strange because if it randomly deleted them, you would be forced to download them again to play the same game that was downloaded before...

well you can open each one in a hex editor and scroll down until you see the name in them, kinda a pain but other than that I don't know

use xm360 and under the title update menu it will tell you what each TU is.  You can even delete ones you don't need right from that menu.

xm360 does list it.  Thanks!

But how do you apply the update?  I copied the title updates to hdd:\cache, ran xm360 and it listed it.  It also created a Cache2 folder with a copy of the TU.  But what now?

I put NHL 10 TU in there and when I ran my NHL 10 game, it didn't say anything.  And it's still in the cache folder after I re-ran xm360.  Does that mean the patch wasn't applied?  Does the TU disappear from the cache folder when it's applied?

Also if my game is NTSC/U, can I use a Region free update or vice versa?   If a game has update 1, update 2, do I need to apply them?

The update just runs from the cache folder.  You won't see anything come up when you run the game unless it needs an update you don't have.  The file remains in that folder, it does not disappear or apply itself to the game.  It just uses the update from that folder.  Think about discs, there would be no way to "write" that update to a finalized disc.  Which is why it's designed to just run from there if Title Updates are present.

You would want to use NTSC/U or RF updates.  And you only need the latest update as they incorporate the lower updates.  Update 2 would contain everything for update 1 and 2.  Such as update 5 would include everything from update 1-4 along with the new update 5 stuff.  You'll notice as each update grows larger.

ah make sense now.  I just tried with SF4.  I put a TU in the cache folder.  This time SF4 actually said, "can't find save with new update, (or something like that), do you want me to create one?"  Also it said, there are new modes.  Sure enough I didn't have the Challenge mode before.  Cool stuff.

I'll make note of backing up the Cache folder too...

I'm sure the great minds in the 360 scene will one day figure out how to download TU's for the games you have on HDD and dump them in the cache folder with xm360.  That would be nice...

Thanks for clarifying.

That would be an awesome feature for xm360 to be able to check the internet for all titles found on your HDD or on your profile as having been played at some point in time and grabbing the latest TU's and downloading them into the cache folder for us.

A dash like Freestyle could implement that feature too along with covers and screenshots.  Great thing about these updates is that they aren't too big.. a few MB.  Have it work in conjunction with http://xbuc.tk.  Look for game ID in HDD:\\, search on xbuc.tk, download and copy to hdd:\cache.  Delete older TU's.

I noticed on xbuc.tk, there are some times games like Gears of War 2, it'll have 2 TU 5 updates, but with different media ID's.  Does it matter which one I get?  Does the Media ID have to match the original backup?
