Rockband Studder On Jtag
« on: February 14, 2010, 06:43:00 PM »

So i installed my rockband2 & beatles game
I also installed Guitar hero world tour and GH5
Both my GH games play flawlessly and the DLC works great as well.

Both my Rockband games studder and the DLC seems 50/50 some work and some don't.

does anyone have any issues with rockband games (jtag)
or have any idea what may be the issue?
I tried to delete my save game for rockband ac/dc and it didn't help.

so all GH games play fine, all RB games don't..  why?

I should note, i'm using an external usb HD to host the games and the DLC/savegames are on a 250gb internal drive

This.  Try running the game off your internal drive.  Chances are your external drive is too slow.

Well that was my first thought. but all my other games seem to play just fine. and GH5 seems to play just  fine.

all the rockband games do not. even the OLD ac/dc rockband studders.
I will move it and give it a try to see if that helps.

Not all games are programmed the same.  The fact that only Rock Band games stutter lead me to believe that their data streaming code might not be as robust as that used in the Guitar Hero code-base.  The fact that the game engine is the only variable that is different between the two games backs up this hypothesis.  I'm pretty confident that I'm right, but I'd love to hear back from you with the results.

OK well i did some testing.
I copied several of my rockband games over to the internal drive. and got no studdering.

The drive specs of my internal and external are the same
8mb cache / 5400 rpm

What is different is the interface, internal is sata obviously wd drive
external is a samsung s2 USB.

So now the question is, is the controller on the samsung external drive the problem. or are ALL usb controllers going to be to slow?

I don't mind buying a faster drive and external enclosure, if it's going to help.
or are those games going to not perform on the slower USB interface?

does anybody have rockband2/beatles games that WORK correctly with no studder on usb external drives?
if so what drive do you have? what external case?

There are several benchmarking solutions available for hard drives.  Find one and post what sort of read speeds you're getting over USB2.0 on your desktop.  It is safe to assume that you'll get similar performance or slightly slower on the 360.  If you get slower than average results with your enclosure on your PC, then you might see better results with a higher quality enclosure.  I'd wait til you hear back from other people before you run out to the store and buy something.

It is possible that over time we might seem some tweaks in the FAT libraries in use by the loaders that may get you slight performance boosts, but that's just pure speculation on my part.

well it was my understanding (perhaps my misunderstanding) that I could only replace the internal drive, but you could only go up to 250gb due to the fact that, that's all MS has put out.

hence why i went with the external (samsung s2 640gb usb2)

but in another thread, it appears, i could put say a 500gb or 1tb sata drive as a replacement for the internal drive?

if this is correct then umm.. i should have done that.. lol I just didn't realize that we could.

Yeah, the 250GB limit only applies to those who wish to use their hard drive on a stock console / console with DVD mod.  Those who've installed the JTAG/SMC hack and run a rebooter such as XBR can use larger drives.

Hope that clears it up for you.

Hey there. I have a western digital usb hard drive with both rock band 2 and the beatles installed and both work great. Have some dlc for rock band 2 and all dlc for the beatles with no performance issues. Maybe the wd usb drive might be a good one to pick up.

thanks for the follow up.
maybe the samsung s2 has a slower controller? IDK.
it seemed comparable http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/portab...hdd,2272-8.html

anyways, i just ordered a WD 640gb sata from newegg.. which i now know i can replace the internal with.
so i should be good. I'll just use the samsung s2 as storage for something else

Well I purchased a WD scorpio 640gb sata 5400rpm 8mb cache drive.

These specs should be sufficient?
all my RB games STILL lag, the hard stutter is gone but they still lag.

no other games seems to exhibit this problem.
but rb2, rb ac/dc and rb beatles all lag or stutter

it's a xenon jtag.. gpu temps are in the 60's

any other ideas?

resolved - increased fan speed from 60% to 70%
no more lag / stutter
