I just got a Zephyr 360 with version 6690 and a Benq drive.  I want to get the most out of it.  I was thinking of getting a Cygnos360 V2 or just Jtaging it.  Any idea what would be best?  Do I need to update the firmware in the dvd drive?  How would I get xbla stuff or dlc on the hard drive after I change the nand?

JTAG will get you the most bang for your buck but it is a difficult hack.  I'd recommend getting a very large 2.5" laptop drive to replace the stock 360 hd...perhaps 500GB.  That way you can put all your backup games and XBLA games all on one drive.  No need to modify the DVD drive if you go with JTAG.

Thx, after I jtag it, how do I get the xbla stuff onto the drive?  Would I need a transfer cable or could I access it through the network

After jtagging you would install xexmenu (multiple ways including iso which does NOT require a flashed drive)
Then using xexmenu you have the option of FTP, flash drives, etc. etc.

Or you can just transfer cable everything but you may find the software to be problematic for larger hard drives.

Do I then need Freeboot or XBReboot?

Way round to do it:

1. Install LPT/USB NAND wiring. Read NAND few times and make sure it's a good dump.
2. Install JTAG wires and efuse protect (remove R6T3 or bridging method), flash XBReboot (most supported hacked dash at the mo).
3. Keep your fingers crossed - some Zephyr's are problematic with hacked dashes.
4. Read out CPU key via Xell/Xellous, backup for safety's sake.
5. Install XexMenu, and you're away!

Don't forget the step where you have to flash XBR to the NAND.  Then you can install XexMenu.
