Mkv On Jtagged Console
« on: January 16, 2010, 07:58:00 PM »

Since you can do just about everything else with XBR on a JTAG console has anyone thought about making it able to play ANY .mkv files?

I am thinking about getting a 1TB externtal HDD just for games and some movies.  Being able to have it in .mkv format would be great.

Have any of you guys considered this?  Is it even possible?

I would say yes if the 360 is powerful enough to process them and someone comes up with the software to do it.  This is where an XBMC solution might come in handy and would be an improvement over the original Xbox.  That's one reason that I stopped using the original Xbox was because of its inability to play mkv files without stuttering and generally just poor playback.

I keep reminding myself that this is all in its infancy.  Right now I check the site everyday to see what new developments are coming out with homebrew and hacking.  I have a feeling that in 3 months we won't be able to keep up with all the cool new stuff that'll be available.  Fun times!

I don't think that it is. There's no real need for a completely new media player/alternative dash like there was with the original Xbox. Back in Xbox 1 days the stock MS dash was very basic and lacking in features. But with the 360, NXE covers most of the functionality XBMC, EvoX, Avalaunch etc were trying to add (dvd playback, picture viewer, mp3 player, avi player, games launched from HDD, custom themes etc etc). When the 360 first came out I remember people talking about how Microsoft has taken a lot of the ideas from the Xbox1 homebrew scene and put them in their own dash  tongue.gif .

My guess is we'll see media codec patches released that allow NXE to playback mkv files (and other formats) through the existing NXE media player. I know very little about the software side of things with the new exploits but I'd imagine this would be the easiest way forward. Either that or a simple .xex media player app that can handle .mkv files. personally I'd kinda like more functionality added directly to NXE rather than several apps.

Same goes for me - rather see the NXE dash updated than lots of stand-alone apps.....unless someone comes up with a better looking/organised dash......

I just posted the same thoughts in another thread on here about xbmc. The more I thought about it I'd rather keep NXE as the dash and either launch XBMC as an app inside of NXE or use xell to run XBMC on a linux distro.

Yeah I thought that at first two, but I am going to have two consoles.  One XBR/XBMC360 and the other just regular for online.

Really that is the most practical way especially if you get consoles really cheap(which isn't hard to do).

You really would only play a handful of retail games online anyways.  COD, Halo, etc.

What I have been doing though is buying the games I want to play online for the PS3.

Some guy traded me his two week old PS3 Slim 120GB the other day with Uncharted 1 & 2, Infamous, MGS4, Little Big Planet GOTY, Demon Souls and a bluetooth headset FOR A JTAGGED XBOX 360!

I paid $30 for the a broken console, fix it, JTAGGED it and got all that for it.

The dude even gave me the receipt to Gamestop where he bought all the stuff from.  I could return it all right now for $545.47 for the next two weeks.

I am sure no one cares, but that is the deal of the century for me.  Everything I own is for sale/trade and I get good deals a lot, but I was just amazed with that one.

I did include the wires and a 250GB hdd, but still it ended up being like a $550 to $100 trade......

Anyways point to all that.....I like the Xbox 360 dash too, but I would suggest having two consoles one XBMC360 and one for retail online(unless LT gets released)  OR just substitute the retail one for the PS3.  You would miss out on online Halo though.  But the PS3 does have some great exclusive games it would suck to miss out on.  I prefer the Xbox 360, but still.
