There is no definitive way of telling if a diode is fast switching , or other type (zener, Schottky, rectifiying, etc) without having its number, or color code.
The diode test on your multimeter , is mainly to tell you if the diode is either shorted , open , or conducting in the right way. It will not tell you anything else about the diode. Especially not how fast it can switch (conduct and stop conducting)
E79 usually is bad jtag wiring. So it is very possible , that under certain circumstances, the diodes aren't acting properly , and frag your xbr.
Taking diodes from old electronics is not a bad move , but having the numbers on them is crucial (or color coded rings). Zener diodes will often come in a glass package so beware.. since zener diodes have very different properties and applications, and could damage your board (most unlikely, but possible)
Find diodes with numbers! If you can't find them in your junk, you could always try to call any sort of local store that has a repair service on place and talk to a technician over there, i'm sure they could part with 3 diodes, because even when you buy them one at time , you should never pay more then spare change for them.
