External Hard Drive On Xbreboot/xexloader
« on: January 02, 2010, 01:52:00 PM »

Just finished jtagging my xbox and installing xbreboot and xexloader and I have a few questions, since there's really no definitive guide.

How do I run arcade games off of an external hard drive? when I tried in xexloader i got an e71.
And how to I extract the xbox 360 isos and run them off of an external hard drive?
Is there a way I can format the external drive and make the xbox think it's like a memory unit to save on? It's a WD mybook, formatted fat32.
And what about dlc and arcade games? I have a ton of DLC on another xbox but I don't wanna use that hard drive on my jtagged box, I just wanna grab the stuff off of it.

anyone have any links to tutorials?

Thanks

1.  as far as im aware, xbla games/dlc can only be played from the hdd up top, and not off an external hdd.  you might want to try extracting the files from the containers, and see if you can launch them from the hdd.
2. search for xbox image browser.  this will allow you to extract the files off the disk.  i havent tested games on xbreboot 8955_3/3a yet, but with v _1, you had to use X360GameHack to patch the default.xex files(program does it automatically). then from there you can play them off the external hdd, or use quickboot to make a shortcut and store it on your 360 hdd/mu.
3. you could look into modding the original 360 hdd and either put an externally mounted esata or sata port and if your hdd enclosure has esata(i dont think it does), you can run the hdd to the top port, and it will see any size hdd.  ive done this with my 2tb drive, but it will see the whole drive, not any partitions, so if you want a larger hdd to show up as a 360 hdd, it will have to be dedicated.

all of this stuff has been posted in the past on here, but i like giving my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for all your answers, so if I go to the store now and buy a SATA laptop hard drive and plug it in to the top part it works automatically as an xbox hard drive? Is it safe to transfer my gamertag to a memory card and sign in to live with it on a different xbox to update my gamerscore, too?

From what I understand you can run Arcade game from the USB drives, you just have to unpack them and then patch the default.xex file to run from any media.

Sorry I don't have any details as I have not done this yet.

Mm as far as i know you cant extract and run xbla games of usb. If it is possible, please let me know which tools you use.

You must put the folder of the live game into the content/000000000000 folder on your sata drive. XBReboot runs them, and Freeboot doesnt i believe. ( i use xbr)

The XBOX will not use an external USB device as a "trusted" storage device for gamesaves, etc... only the 360hdd and memory cards will work for that as of now.  But you can run just about anything off the usb device (External USB HDD or a USB memory stick) with the right tools.

To copy a game to USB HDD use the XEXloader file browser (d-pad right from main screen, use X to change device) and create the directory path usb:/Games/<Name of Game>/ (to create a new directory press Y for options).  From within that directory, press Y and select Copy DVD and XEXloader will begin dumping the disc to that folder (if it freezes, just power off 360 and try again... this is a known bug in XEXloader that will hopefully be fixed in the next release)

Once finished if you are running the latest XBR _3(a/b) you should be able to launch the default.xex in that folder to boot the game.  Also when you reload XEXloader you will see a shortcut to launch the game from the main page.  If you are running older XBR _1, you will need to patch the game on your PC with XEXtool to remove the media restriction... but I suggest updating to XBR_3 since _1 will freeze/lag during gameplay for most 3d graphic games. (use gentoo/lflash to update, it take about 10mins and has less chance of write errors)

As for DLC/Arcade games, the easiest thing to do is just use XEXloader's file browser to copy the content to the proper folder on the xbox hard drive, and use the XBR dash to launch it (for arcade games at least).  However there is a newer tool which is based on the 360 kiosk disk (check the news on main page) which will allow you to launch XBL packaged content from any device.  Although as of now, it involves a lot of .ini editing every time you want to add something.  Hopefully that will be improved later.

As for your FAT32 drive... before filling it up with content you might want to think about switching to HFS+ (MAC format).  HFS+ works much better on 360, much faster, and does not have the 4GB filesize limit.  You will need some special software to format to HFS, and also to read/write files to this format from a windows PC.

You should be able to find lots more info on updating NAND from gentoo (lflash.c) and the HFS+ filesystem if you search the forums.

as far as im aware, it should be safe to connect with your gamertag on a non hacked console.  ive read a a few ppl say they have done that.

use wx360 to extract iso content and patch with latest xextool (read the readme first)
xextool is a dos based app

for xbla use wxpirs to extact content and then unlock to full again with xbla unlocker.

put the extracted and patched content in the correct places on the hdd and enjoy

search google for the apps

Hi I cannot figure out how to write files to the HFS+ drive.  I am using xp and have used both Macdrive8 and Transmac but I don't know how to get the files from xp to that drive.  You can drag and drop.  Is there a good tut anywhere?

You should be able to drag/drop with MacDrive installed.
I have heard that having Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% installed can interfere with MacDrive though.

I can't seem to get anything to work, I also heard DVDmaulerer or w/e works as well but I can't figure out how to use that application.  Can anyone send a link to a guide that's in detail?  I am having trouble moving a ISO to a HDD bootable files.

Make sure your running the current xbr release for your box. Use wx360 to extract the ISO to a folder. Put that folder on your external HD and launch it using XEXLoader. No patching required and it can't be easier.

I've loaded XEXLoader (GOD) version and I have game as the following on my USB disk .
-Games
--Halo 3
--Fallout
--blahblah

-EMU
--MAME
--BLAH

Goodluck.
