How Did M$ Detect The Dvd Rom Firmware Anyway?
« on: November 29, 2009, 06:50:00 AM »

Doesn't that at least suggest their should be a method to reach the dvd rom and other facets of the xbox via the network?  I realize I'm not the first person to think of it.  I'm just wondering the answer.

I believe that they can detect the behaviour of the disc in the drive when being played, not being able to detect the firmware on its own.

Also any network data is encrypted so we cant use that route if you was thinking of blocking detection?

But that does give a good indication that you can mod your console and use it to get dlc and system updates safely, if you just stay offline when you play your games.

not if the nand stores your flags wink.gif. Then your screwed regardless playing offline. Plus I heard rumors going around that original games play differently on modified fw.

they could have sent a command to the xbox telling them to dump the firmware to the hdd and then do a checksum against the hash (because microsoft would know what models had which type of drive) and if they differed put up a ban flag.

thats just speculation

correct me if i am wrong i dont know much about checksums and hashes but wouldnt everyone be different due to the key.

I don't think that is possible, reason being the drive would need to be entered into its vendor mode for reading/writing fw. The drive is inoperable for normal gameplay use during this stage so I don't think m$ pursued this route for detection. I'm pretty sure they used a series of methods outside of dumping fw to detect whether or not the box is modified. for example, with all the added security checks that ixtreme offered, increased the time interval of the dvd drive accepting the disc (a stock drive would have a few checks, ixtreme had several) So perhaps a bit of code flagged itself each time a game took longer to verify than it should. And bam, m$ just figured out a way to detect modded firmware without actually detecting modified firmware, but rather detecting these inconsistencies.

During the Update Process would've been the easiest way. They could have gotten the drive in vendor mode that way. Like I stated in a previous post, writing a program to execute a program inside the initial program is relatively easy to do. There updates would be like like the DOS Command Prompt and the update inside of it would be like iPrep or JF.

if you do the checksum of the entire firmware, it's true, but if you do just some key parts, it could do a specific chcksum for each kind of dvd drive.

DemisesAngel

it's exactly what I think. To do a test I have a xbox, still on live, that I just modded after the october update. It's working great until now.

I has talk with one there know something about Nonstealth 1.4 and all other firmware he says that all firmware "Extreme,iXtreme " can be detectet by MS. the firmware has some security calculations there take to long for the "Extreme,iXtreme " But it will be fix in the new one "LT". you can believe it or not. But it a trusted source.

Yes i has because it was almost the same questions? How true this is ? you can believe it or not.. But why would I lie? Would not make much sense? I give just the knowledge I have disclosed. Yes i has only post 4 post. But maybe i dont use my normally username here more because it is my gamertag on live?

But I will not give you a name. If he want his name out, he may even write it by himself. I give only my knowledge to you and others.

I can tell you that they must store flags. I set up a external modded drive and kept my original drive in my 360. I had a external sata cable out of the back of the 360 so I would connect what ever drive I wanted to use, and always unplugged my network when I used the modded drive, yet I was still banned.
