Games Patches Question
« on: November 15, 2009, 08:57:00 AM »

Hokay, my question got lost in the threadnaught about the current ban's effects...

Basically what I want to know is, is it possible to copy the patch data that has already been written 'to a console' for 'a game', onto another hard drive, and have the console make use of that patch data?

I imagine this would depend heavily on whether the game's patch data resides on the NAND (I think unlikely due to the limited size of older ones) or on the HDD.

If on the NAND, I understand it may be encrypted using the CPU Key, which means that short of having your own CPU key to reencrypt it with for the purpose of getting the console to use it, means you are stuffed.

If on the HDD, is the data encrypted at all? If not, has anyone successfully transferred game patch data from one drive to another? Are there any sources available online where one could get 'stand-alone' patch data for the games? Has anyone tried 'intercepting' the data downloaded during a game patch, writing it to a USB thumb drive or DVD and attempted to apply the patch from there?

Some games have crippling bugs or otherwise major bugs that absolutely have to be patched; Borderlands' Siren bug is the most recent example that comes to mind.

Having some way to get your game patched AFTER you have been banned would be great, I think.
