i bought a new xenon 360 as my other one decided to die. what i want to do is just put the modded drive into this new 360. can i just swap it over and it will work or is there anything i have to do before?

You need the key off the drive that is currently in the system, meaning you might as well mod that drive. You cannot just swap drives.

but if i hook the drive up to my pc and get the key of the dvd drive, can i then use the key with the new motherboard?

no you need to get the key from your new 360's drive, then spoof the old drive with the new ones key...
so you may as well just mod the new drive straight away like bong said
